Arena management: Hiding in plain sight
Posted on October 18, 2012
by Jeff Long

We have a nice arena, by all accounts. We didn’t ask to buy it, true, but it’s ours now. It would be nice if the hockey team it was built for would actually play some games there. It would be nice if this whole thing didn’t stink to high heaven.

We’re holding the bag, but we’re not allowed to see what’s inside. That’s where things stand with Columbus Arena Management, which wants to run the arena away from our prying eyes

Members of the semiprivate board created to manage publicly owned Nationwide Arena still are bickering with Columbus and Franklin County officials about whether their meetings will be open to the public.

Still looking for some help with my survey. Honestly, I expected the response to be greater. Just wondering if the lack of interest indicates a general apathy toward the issue. Thoughts?

BTW, if you are apathetic, please still fill out the survey. I'd like that to be reflected in my results as well. Thanks again!

Help me graduate. Take an 11-minute survey. Maybe win $50. Share with friends.

Hey, that means you filled it out! Thanks!

I confess that there is repetition (and redundancy), but it's not without rhyme or reason. The results you and others are providing will help me eliminate some questions and cut the the survey down. It might not be the most user-friendly right now, but it really makes a big difference in the long run.

Thanks again. Oh, and tell your friends--but if you do, leave out the stuff after "amazingly."

Hi - I'm writing my dissertation about the Nationwide Arena deal, and I'm hoping y'all can help me out by completing a short (11-minute avg. completion time) survey related to the arena, local politics, and the Blue Jackets. Though everyone here seems to have an opinion, anyone in or around Franklin County can take the survey (even if they couldn't care less about the deal, the Blue Jackets, or the mayor).

If interested, please go to cbusarenasurvey.com. And if you're feeling really motivated, pass the survey URL on to friends, family, colleagues, and random people. Thanks!!

Discounter Big Lots wants to brand Nationwide Arena’s box office

The Big Lots closeout retail chain could soon slap its signature exclamation point outside of the Nationwide Arena box office.

The city’s Downtown Commission on Tuesday will consider approval of the Columbus discounter’s name above the ticket office canopies at the arena’s west courtyard during its meeting as an indication the Blue Jackets want to generate more sponsorship revenue off the building.

The proposed sign package features a 25-foot tall, orange exclamation point that serves as part of the retail chain’s logo. It would be positioned on the brick column between the two pair of doors into the arena’s ticket lobby.

The taxpayers of Franklin county and Columbus are assuredly out of quite a bit of money if the lockout extends into the regular season. The Blue Jackets currently have 41 dates locked up on the arena's schedule that could have been used for other events that could bring in a lot more revenue than a bottom dwelling hockey team would.

Brings to mind the episode of Seinfeld where Kramer starts working his tail off at a business for no pay. At the end the boss calls him in and criticizes his work and says they have to let Kramer go. When Kramer protests the firing saying that they don't pay him anyway, the boss says, "That's what makes this so difficult."

Just amazing. If you have access to read it the Dispatch is touting the benefits of the hockey lockout for the taxpayers owning the arena. Basically, since the taxpayers get nothing from the Blue Jackets, it's awesome that they lose nothing during the shutdown. What a deal for the taxpayer!!!

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2012/09/19/whats-the-impact.html

From the article;

The lockout that began on Sunday will not cost taxpayers or the Franklin County agency that owns the arena anything because the public receives no revenue from hockey games — not from concessions, parking or tickets.

Wait... isn't that like claiming that if you work for no pay or benefits, then it's a sweet deal when you're layed off?

The arrogance of the Dispatch is beyond belief.

One of the major reasons for the Blue Jackets bailout was so the team wouldn't move out of Columbus which we're told would cost "thousands of jobs in the Arena District". If the NHL lockout that is looming becomes a reality and wipes part of the season or all of the season out, is there language in the sales contract or the 'no rent' Blue Jacket lease that provides some sort reimbursement to the city from the NHL or the Blue Jackets? Or is the city stuck maintaining an empty building on it's dime?

“When the city subsidizes hockey, it reduces its ability to pay for public safety officials, public transportation and services upon which its citizens rely.”

City Council made it official Monday night, allocating the first chunk of the $240 million we will pay for Nationwide Arena. That’s $4.5 million for the Blue Jackets and, as for neighborhoods that reek of urban decay, well, council hopes to do something for them, too. Maybe next year.
there was a 200 year old prison there.

you could have put a chuck e cheese where the arena is ,and the area would be revitalized.

there was a 200 year old prison there.

you could have put a chuck e cheese where the arena is ,and the area would be revitalized.
