Nature just makes a lot of sense to me. Everything has its place, that's been worked out over millions of years. I just like it. I like being able to relax, being able to look at an entire place, and entire entity, in which people and their decisions are not the prominent motif. I like going for days without talking. I like not wearing shoes, crazily enough its like having another pair of eyes, on my feet.
I think it is very difficult to feel something so deeply, intensely beautiful, and then have to come back to the city. At the same time, I am much more comfortable walking around New York City at night than walking in Columbus in broad daylight, go figure.
And BTW, I never watch TV. Just that one episode of Oprah... meh, what can I say, it was just one of those days.
But yeah... a walk in the woods is my preeminent method of problem-solving, always works.

Goofy question perhaps... but why then do you live in a city?

I do agree. I am depressive by nature, and nature cures me. I am working on getting out, no doubt. But I really don't think that's the only thing at play, here. I am just standing by what i believe to be the truth, using my voice. It may not be your point of view, and that's OK.

Is it that you find the world imperfect and you're unable to live in a less than perfect world? Not necessarily having a dream, but rather that the world constantly disappoints?

Not to rip.
You seem to be exhibiting some textbook signs of deep depression.
Kill your TV (unplug it for a while and promise not to plug it in for at least a week) and get out.
You have a real affinity to unspoiled nature. Walk the appalachian trail or the mountains in Kentucky. You need to get out of the 'city' for a while. Sitting surrounded by what you loath isn't going to help.
Seriously.

Nothing derogatory to say here. But the descriptions, however evocative, won't really point to solutions until people can agree on causes. The solutions you have in mind presuppose both agreement on the problem and an understanding of those causes, but they're not explicit.

Example: People, collectively, don't manage the environment in a manner that can be sustained indefinitely, or even for a reasonably long period, given projected population growth, advances in technology, and resource constraints. (For Gram's sake I'll throw in "arguably.") Why is that? Is it because of an inherent collective action problem, the tragedy of the commons? Is it because the incentives of electoral competition have prompted leaders to maximize short-term gains and hide long-term costs? Is it because, psychologically, people in general have shorter time horizons than they should? Is it because the logic of insufficiently regulated markets produces concentrated oligopolies with an interest in making a fast buck by burning through the resources that do exist (or, only slightly more charitably, produces companies that compete to offer you the most attractive package of resources to consume at the lowest cost?) Or is it just that humanity is remarkably efficient at producing ravening hordes with mouths and stomachs?

Each cause and effect has its proponents, and each suggests a different solution, based in economics, politics, or psychology... but I'm not sure we're even at the point at which we agree on the magnitude of the problem (not by a long shot), let alone on the cause.

I have been stewing a lot about this the last few days, and reading a lot, listening to a few lectures and the like.

Maybe it has more to do with how we live in cities, than almost anything else. Maybe "green jobs" is a concept that shouldn't be talked about just in the standard context of technology, but in taking back some of the influence over our cities, and regional planning, which may in the end, save much more energy than any "green" technology.

Which is, I think, a lot of what we discuss here on CU.

So, now I am formulating in my mind, new parameters for how things could be made better, and I think it would largely grow out of just the kind of community we have established here. Support for nature preserves, support of small and local businesses and farms, reworking of our urban structure. Taking back our "right to life", so to speak, from large centralizing entities and stultifying culture that would steal the very dirt out from under our feet while we are too busy watching TV.

Unfortunately, if I am to be realistic, I have to say that I do not think this will happen. Not enough of the right kinds of people will be harmed by what is in motion, until too many people have been harmed and we are largely rendered powerless. So my next best choice is to best protect myself and mine, and do as little harm as possible.

I was feeling kind of crummy today, and so I watched TV. They had an interesting show on Oprah today (you'll never hear me say that again). A few families who were very, very wasteful with electricity, gas, recyclables, garbage, etc etc, took a 7-day challenge to live with less. They all found it very close to drug withdrawal at first, but after several days, they noticed the patterns of their family lives becoming richer and more rewarding, and didn't feel the need to return to their old patterns of consumption. They variously described it as feeling like "waking up from a daze", "finally feeling alive", "checking in", etc.

Despite this all seeming very off topic, it is very much all the same topic. Politicians, taxes, corporations, technology, none of that stuff is going to change in our favor. Even with the current crisis, capital is still being funneled up and away from us, into fewer and fewer hands. Marxists often like to portray the proletariat as being at the bottom of the economic foodchain. Well it isn't. What's under the proletariat? Dirt, and water. The very ground they stand on. Not too many people cared when it was just the dirt and water being treated, as Wendell Berry would say, as "a nigger". Not too many more people cared when it was just poor people being treated this way, or even lower-middle class people. But start foreclosing on large numbers of middle-class white folks' houses, and then people sit up and take notice.

Trouble is, that very dirt and water, and those very poor people were what we've been ratcheting our economy up on for the last few decades. But now the fund has run dry, and it's our turn. It's only a one-way flow of money, and most people I know are on the wrong end of the flow.

Just some more thoughts, feel free to rip away derogatorily! Or just be like, "That's gay, dude. Somebody's on their period!"

Yep, I know ;) Neither my husband nor I actually hunt (I do fish - I grew up fishing with my Dad, who is an excellent bass fisherman, but also wrote general fishing articles for the Missouri Conservationist - not a hunter, tho). Both of our brother's hunt. My brother in Missouri hunts on land his best friend bought, and also on his friend's uncle's property. My brother-in-law and his kids hunt on my brother-in-law's land. Carl and I owned 24 acres of farmland in Union county until about 2 years ago, and would have people ask to hunt on it (even though it wasn't even very wooded -- just around the edges). You might be able to ask a stranger to hunt on their land, but we weren't necessarily receptive to strangers (some folks are - or will sell hunting rights). Maybe you'll make a friend on here who grew up rural and will take you hunting on the family property?

OR - maybe you can come hunt in my backyard in VV, if you're into squirrels!!! (Just kidding -- sorta)...

Start with a hunter safety class. Good resource: http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/ Best bet for where to hunt: know someone with land :)

Yep... it was more the last part I was wondering about. :)

I don't really have an answer to that last one.. I hope that there is some sort of organization that could pair more experieced hunters with people that are interested..

For my part I haven't picked up a gun to hunt in over 20 years, and even then I wasn't very successful..

As for finding hunting grounds, there are plenty of farmers that allow hunting on their land with permission. The best way to go about it is to show up well before the season starts and ask....

Of course there are always public hunting lands..

I was thinking more along the lines of the clothing.

Ebay

There is nothing more green than reusing something.

I have trouble explaining this to my wife. I use our old newspapers for painting drop cloths. My wife will go out and buy plastic recycled sheets to use as drop cloths and recycle the paper. In her mind she is being more green. But in all honesty, my 'green' came out of being a cheap Scott.
