He wants total control and power, and he's afraid of other Republicans finding the balls to distance themselves from him, which is understandable, because he's not very popular.

One has to wonder why Kasich is set on remaking the state Republican Party central committee. One of his supporters is Doug Preisse, the gay Franklin County GOP head. Is this perhaps one way to make the party less extremist? I understand that many conservative Republicans have been uncomfortable with Preisse.

I was going to say, merely saying that a quid pro quo offer was made is hardly a thorough enough analysis to hold up in court (or on an Internet message board). The issues are what was offered and what was requested.

Appointments to public university boards, for example, will basically never be the result of any kind of wide-open talent search or anything of that kind. Manning suggests that he would be given more influence over appointments to fill vacancies on the board of Kent State University (which is a major institution in Portage County, Manning's base). Would that subject to any greater political influence than would be present in such decisions otherwise? Since Manning declined the deal, Kasich will simply now be exercising that appointment authority on his own and ignoring recommendations that Manning might make for such positions. That's hardly a less politicized outcome.

This is not the same as Kasich soliciting a personal check (or even a campaign donation) from someone interested in serving on the Kent State board.

Well let's just realize that Blago tried to literally auction off a direct ticket into the US Senate, this looks much more like the extremely common filth that is politics. Some politicians are better than others and actually get stuff done, but they're still just a bunch of back-stabbing Machiavellians--all of the them in every party in the world for the entirety of human history.

Well, it's likely that nothing criminal transpired. However, Manning going public was probably the best way to get the governor's people to keep their distance for a while. That's considered a nuclear option in intra-party maneuvering because neither party wants its internal sausage-making seen in process.

Of course, now the governor's team has no reason not to swing into all-out opposition mode and see that he loses the election rather than simply dropping out of it. He's made it quite clear that he won't be on their side against DeWine.

The chairman of the Portage County Republican Party says that allies of Gov. John Kasich offered him special influence over gubernatorial appointments if he agreed not to run for the state GOP central committee, which Kasich has been trying to take over.

Andrew Manning sent a notarized affidavit to state and federal law-enforcement officers yesterday, asking them to investigate whether laws were broken in the alleged effort to get him to drop out of the committee race.

Manning provided a copy of the sworn statement to The Dispatch and said in an interview that he felt uncomfortable with what he perceived as the offer of a quid pro quo and “relentless” pressure from friends of Kasich.....

“Had I agreed to withdraw as a candidate, they told me I would be designated as the ‘Governor’s Guy’ in Portage County and that I would be given influence in who Gov. Kasich appoints to Kent State University boards and other state government appointments as they come open.

http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2012/03/09/candidate-kasich-allies-offered-a-deal-if-he-quit-race.html

Jeez, is Joe Hallet looking for a new job, didn't he get the memo, to protect Kaisch. Maybe the Dispatch is actually starting to take their public service mission seriously, nah....seems Hallet wants out.
