I don't think that's good for the MLS. The playoffs are a American construct, as the EPL has no divisions, no playoffs, just "the table" and who's ever on top at the end of the season is the champ. Now, I'm not so naive to think that that would ever fly here. But I would propose pearing down the playoffs to 4 teams with only the top two in the two divisions qualifying. The more prolonged your playoffs are the less importance is given to any regular season match. So when the score was 2-2 after the PK I was mentally thinking "great, now we need another 2-0 2nd half advantage to advance..." Then I heard mutterings of other fans who were simply rooting for an aggregate tie to force extra time.</p> <p>So, after googling, I find that the MLS does not use "away goals" and that I was rooting under a misinformed premise! Oops!</p> <p><a href="http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/1110/major-league-soccer/2008/11/05/950226/walshs-word-mls-needs-the-away-goals-rule">Here's an article</a> from last season maligning how boring the first leg matches are <em>because of</em> the lack of using away goals. The author basically says that without the incentive of away goals, the higher seed team plays a super boring, conservative match on the road to take a draw home.
