Yeah, I'm afraid I don't follow. Are we supposed to assume she borrowed a member of City Council's iPad for that event rather than owning her own?

Duh, anytime we see an ipad anywhere, we should instantly assume that it's a city official abusing their ipad in order to oppress us. It's just common sense!

I don't think he thinks he is more intelligent than me. We just differ on where we see Tablet usage. I agree that tablet usage will take off more and more every year, but I am still skeptical of its use in everday corporate setting. Where I do see it taking off is in education. In my opinion if I were a developer I would strictly focus on education right now.

Again, this is my experience and in other fields maybe it is different. Everyone I work with has to have a laptop already, and the tablets could never replace PC's in our environment. I really want to know besides viewing powerpoints, and checking email what someone like me would use one for? Like me I mean the corporate guy on a pc all day using ms office. I just don't see the need.

What I am trying to say is, how can I use it to be more productive? Give me ideas. We had a little training video we had to watch, but the ideas for use were not all that great.

BuenaVista, You can't reason with someone who thinks they are far more intelligent than you. If the iPad has worked for them, then it's the best for everyone else, no matter your experience. -Why does Alan Harper dislike me so?-

I disagree. Once you lock down a company laptop, it's not much more capable than a tablet. In fact, probably less so seeing as how the software wasn't developed for screen interaction w/o a keyboard. Support costs on a laptop + docked devices + upgrades + maintenance isn't peanuts.

There's a trend in software to move users off of excessive machinery like pcs/laptops to electronic devices that allow a simpler performance of tasks in fewer, more elegant metaphors. One day, the only people toting around real laptops are going to be developers themselves. In fact, most of the world's electronic consumers will never interact with a real pc, seeing as how they're overkill for the vast majority of business tasks.

I've yet to see anyone wave a laptop at another device and transfer sensitive healthcare application context to the receiving device where it appeared ready for interaction. Yet we demoed just that capability with an industry partner at the major healthcare conference earlier this year. Something that took a miniscule time to develop using the built in capabilities of the iPad. Smart phones and tablets are the future of development. Dismissing them as toys misses the point that they implement elegant metaphors for how devices should work, generations beyond stuck-in-their-ways laptop makers. The fact that many business application developers have been slow to embrace the power of these new metaphors is only a critique on those developers and major industry players, not the devices themselves.

I was given an ipad at my work and already had a cellphone and laptop. The ipad is good for meetings (pptx converted to pdf, etc)and as stated before we use it to replace many binders that we make. Overall though, it is a toy. It is a toy that is useful sometimes, but the same could be accomplished by a laptop. It is easier to carry to a meeting than unplugging and unlocking your laptop from the docking station though.

I believe the paperless environment could have been achieved more cost effectively through other means for city council, but the same could be said for my company as well. When I received one I was torn, it is a cool toy, but it was also a waste of money, and being a stockholder of my company I hate to see capex that I believe are wasteful.

I really hate it when people get hot under the collar when government workers "get" something. If we expect excellent results from government workers and elected officials, we have to be OK with providing them modern business tools. iPads are becoming pretty standard tools.

The iPad has cornered 76% of the tablet market and it has 100,000+ developers working on apps. Many of these apps extend the functionality of the device for other business applications.

Seems like a no brainer. They did the right thing.

howatzer said:
OK -speculation countered with speculation.
I have no reason to believe that there are IT pros at city hall with mac experience.
I do know that business IT pros specializing in macs are a rarity (few programs concentrate on mac os because A) the Xserve software changes substantially every couple of years and B) the mac business/institutional market share is still low.

Specialization is a moot point, IT staff generally develop skills around new products that get bought (which happens after the fact), not vice versa. IT staff value is based on their continuing capability to learn, not the rapidly diminishing value of what they knew in the past about products whose useful lifespans deprecate quickly.

In the past, yes, Apple has committed numerous business-related software sins (and so has every other software vendor). Pointing this out doesn't, again, have any bearing on what they may be trying to do now except that it's convinced a lot of people that Apple products aren't for business period. That's an untenable position to take considering IT isn't about sticking one's head in the sand. I understand why operational types do it, but it's counter-productive to why software exists in the first place.

Fact is, if we were talking about an IBM product, none of you would be saying a peep. I'm hardly an Apple apologist (seeing as I have 4 pcs within 2 ft of me), but the money we're talking about here amounts to a rounding error in the IT world.

This thread was over thanksgiving weekend, our rants weren't on company time until today.

I'm sweetening up to this though.. getting rid of the need to print out all those pages is certainly a good thing. I still think they should have at least looked into other alternatives. Could the files have just been emailed to the council members to open up on their laptops that they most likely already have? After reading the article about Cincinnati I'm not sure kindles would be a good idea. The council members there said it was a waste as they still had to print out most things so they could take notes. I'm not familiar with iPads or how easy it would be to take notes on them..

I don't get the fuss? It's pretty clear that this will save the city money - isn't that a good thing?

It sounds like some of the complaints are due to iPads costing more than other alternatives.

As someone who is both a PC-nerd and a Mac-user, I've gotten insane amounts of productivity out of my apple products over the past few years. The cost is higher, but the bang-for-the-buck is higher as well.

Why would we want the people tasked with running our city to cut corners and use other devices because they're cheaper. I'm all in favor of putting the best tools in their hands, even if there is a one-time cost of $100 or $200 per unit. That's a negligible cost in the long term.

I don't get the fuss? It's pretty clear that this will save the city money - isn't that a good thing?

Also, how is it different than any business that offers its employees laptops, cell phones, iPads/tablets? There are rules for using those things, just like any work-use computers. I think we've gotten far enough into the portable technology world to manage the responsibility.
