Official Word from Friends of Goodale Park:
Friends of Goodale Park is extremely pleased to announce that at 4:12 pm on Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, the Goodale Fountain was turned on, and that there does not appear to be any reason that it should not continue to operate. The new well pump is supplying enough water to the pond now that the pond water is actually flowing out the overflow. There remain some issues about the lights, but those should be resolved within the next week or so.

Saturday morning I ran through Goodale Park and saw the FOGP members tending beds, pulling weeds, collecting trash and maintaining the park. I don't think any of them in the park that cool, wet morning asked for a dollar or was compensated for any of their work. Over the years they have kept the park in amazing form, planting dozens of trees, tending to beds, restoring entry points and keeping things looking good. While this fountain has been a total debacle, I think they deserve a huge mulligan.

For the people that keep on complaining and demanding answers, I think you'd get more of them if you showed up, donated some time, pulled some weeds and fished some Four Loco cans out of the pond with your bare hands.

I had the honor to serve with the FGP board in the past. This is an exceptionally dedicated and competent group of volunteers who fundraise for and coordinate a number of maintenance and improvement projects in the park. They organize workdays that include planting, pruning, weeding, and trash cleanup. They encourage tree and bench adoptions. They organize educational walks and an annual garden tour. And, they serve as stewards to the many historic elements in the park, including gates, monuments, and the fountain.

The old fountain had to be replaced. In determining a new fountain, public input was sought, including a neighborhood meeting after the change of design (which was well attended). The FGP is always open to feedback from the public. You may not like the fountain (no one design would please everyone), but you can't say you didn't have an opportunity to to get involved and have your voice heard.

As far as the problems, it has been a troubled project. This group has tons of successful projects under their belt, but this one just had what seems like everything possible go wrong. Personally, I think they are taking the correct steps to identify and correct each issue as each happens. It may not be on your timetable, but dealing with all the various parties involved does take time. I do think they have been upfront and have provided answers.

Annual reports of accomplishments by this group can be found here: http://goodalepark.org/annual_reports

How bout NO! These "friends" owe the residents of the neighborhood 1) an apology for this disaster and 2) a nice detailed time line of what is going on.

I will not layoff. I think WE deserve answers!

Dude, seek professional help. The FOGP meetings are open to the public, the info is available in numerous places online. Quit bitching, get off the sidelines, get involved and maybe you might have a positive impact in the neighborhood.

Was there an opportunity to vote on this fountain before it happened?
No.

In an effort to provide some history, I'll chime in here with both memory and rumor. So FWIW...

Some years ago there was a design contest with some of the contending entries published in the Village Vibe (anybody out there remember that monthly?). As I recall, the winner was selected by a volunteer group, perhaps the FoGP. This all happened before the internet made the kind of communication we now have on sites like CU possible.

From what I heard recently, later on the winning designer was then asked to make a new design because his original design was found to be unaffordable. What got built apparently was his affordable alternative. The contest was so long ago, I don't recall if his original design looked like what got built. As I recall, the Vibe article stated the winner was/is a local artist or sculptor.

So, apparently this fountain was not voted on by anyone, but the person who designed it did win a competition intended to create the new fountain. This fountain may or may not be similar to his original winning design.

I gained added appreciation when the fountain got tagged earlier this year. The elephants are a reference to the Sells Brothers and I guess the layercaking is an intentional reference to all the weddings held in the gazebo? Like it or not that makes sense.

Read the interview below about the original plan....But don't ask any questions....The Friends of Gooddale Park do not like it when you ask questions that realistic and to the point.

Oringinal interview about fountain….
