Review: Akai Hana
By: Morgan Kelley

Akai Hana is an authentic Japanese restaurant which celebrated 25 years in business in 2011. Their menu includes a mix of Japanese-style and Western-style sushi, noodle bowls, several Korean entrees, yakitori and more. The restaurant decor feels like a throwback to the 1980s, in a half-kitsch half-earnest fashion, but the staff is always quite friendly, and the divided configuration of the restaurant space keeps it feeling intimate despite the large size of the place.

I love Kooma and I eat at Sushi En too because its close to work. Akai Hana is also good but not easy for me to get over that way.

I'd love Kooma's food on Haiku's patio. That'd rock.

Doesn't seem much mention of Sushi Ting right by Mo Mo 2. As an Asian dude, I highly recommend them. Fair prices, great sushi.

Japanese Oriental is close to Alana's.
i've picked up food around hamilton and Morse and wondered about Tora, thanks for the info! I always thought it might be some jewish/japanese fusion thing.

Mmm, gefilte fish rolls!

It's like the Kahiki of bad sushi.

Precisely the charm!

I have had good inexpensive rolls at that place by Alana's that's called something really catchy like "Oriental Restaurant."

My usual favorite is Kikyo in UA, but I recently tried Restaurant Tora, which is behind a Raising Cane's in a Gahanna Strip Mall.... and was floored. Everything that touched my mouth in there was noteworthy. Best made rolls I've had in ages. So, so, good. And... kind of a guilty thrill finding such awesomeness in the last place you'd expect. Never been to Kihachi, I assume it's that same kind of thrill.

Checked out Otani for the first time last night.

Interesting interior as other have mentioned, aka super creepy vibe. Slow/poor service and the sushi was terrible. The rice was loose, the rolls weren't tight and pretty sloppy, didn't taste fresh, etc.

With all the other fantastic options for sushi in Columbus, I can't think of one reason to return to this time capsule. It's like the Kahiki of bad sushi.

Kihachi is my favorite restaurant in all of Columbus, but $$$$ as lew said. I'm going next month for my bday, woo!
Akai Hana is bomb too, the blue fin I last had there was amazing.
A Japanese friend told me it's slightly disrespectful to ask to sit at the "bar" and you should instead say "counter." I've never heard that before though, seems fishy.

Thanks for the tip. I believe it, sushi etiquette is intense (google has pages and pages on it). It's so overlooked here in America that a faux pas or two is inevitable though.

Tensuke is really cool, I love the fish tank in the counter service/takeout part. I haven't eat in there, we would normally meander in Tensuke after eating at AH and the counter part was always slammed. I hear it's good as well.
Also, as an aside, Lemongrass wouldn't be my first choice in the city for sushi, but if in the SN I'd go there instead of SR or haiku.

I think I'd go to the Giant Eagle freezer before SR.

I have never had anything I liked at all from Lemongrass. I must be doin' it rong. And Otani is way more about awesome atmosphere (helloooooo time machine) than really great sushi. don't get me wrong though. I loooooove some Otani.
ANNNNNNNNDDDD
That crappy bowling alley right there usually has jello shots...great intermission between friday night dinner and Otani karaoke. Eeeeks.

I'll admit it's been a while since I've been to lemongrass, but we would get the eel roll and it was always good.
Otani has the best Miso soup I've tasted in the city. If they would bottle it I'd drink that instead of soda during the day.
as I've said, AH is ahead of all of them.

You aren't the only person I know that likes Lemongrass. I've just never had any luck there or sushi that's much better than the case at Whole Foods.

Which reminds me since we're talking AH...the rolls in the case at Tensuke or ordered from the counter in there are damn good too. They make this giant spicy shrimp roll that I crave all the time but so rarely get these days.

I wouldn't rule out Kooma, B and I had a great meal there. lemongrass in the SN is good, for campus check you Diaspora at Lane and High St.

ahead of those is Otani and Akai Hana, with AH taking the lead. I haven't gotten to the NW region ones.

(and referring to Merc's post- I eat sushi rolls)
I didn't think AH bar was more than 10-20 seats, I might have missed some of it. I'm pretty sure the lady I work with sits at one of the large round tables.

I don't know. She's from Norther China and lives in UA and goes to AH with her family and freinds. I doubt they eat at the bar, so she must have been talking about the tables. You'll have to inquire about bar reservations.

It's a pretty big place and you can certainly sit at the bar. Kihachi isn't a traditional sushi restaurant but more like a Japanese tapas place. Kikyo is my goto but the chef has something to do with that. I can't say it's empirically better tasting. If you are doing an omakase, Kihachi or Sushi Bistro Masa and if you just want some damn good rolls Kikyo or Akai Hana.

For the bar as well?
