Google Glass – A Week With New Technology
BY RYAN FREDERICK ON	JUNE 12, 2013 AT 8:00 AM

Google Glass is undoubtedly the most talked about gadget of the year. As a technology company that has developed applications used by more than 10 million people, AWH prides itself on staying two to three years ahead of the digital curve. So after one of our developers, Johannes Setiabdui, attended Google I/O in May, we jumped at the chance to become part of the Glass developer community.
Published June 06, 2013
Associated Press

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Casinos in several states are forbidding gamblers from wearing Google Glass, the tiny eyeglasses-mounted device capable of shooting photos, filming video and surfing the Internet. Regulators say the gadgets could be used to cheat at card games.

HAPI Project Aims to Create Scalable Platform for Food Production
BUSINESS PROFILES — BY WALKER EVANS ON	JUNE 4, 2013 AT 8:00 AM

We’ve all either seen some sort of documentary or read a research article or two about the problems with our industrialized food system. While it’s great to be able to enjoy ripe tomatoes year round, there are countless negative side-effects from the chemicals used in the processes, the toll taken on the soils of mono-cropped lands, and the simple flavors lost in the engineering processes to ensure availability.

Those reasons and more were enough for Tyler Reed to want to make some changes. He’s the founder of HAPI, an open-source platform for food production that turns the system on its head, making local food growing systems more readily available and technologically automated for efficiency.

Incidentally, I rode a CNG bus for the first time yesterday. The Twittersphere had many comments about the buses being quieter, but I found the same noise level as the 2008-12 Gillig Low Floor diesel models. Only the idle is a bit smoother. Those hybrid-electric buses from 2010 are way quieter. Perhaps the obnoxiously loud 2001-03 New Flyer models are what people are comparing them to.

I was one of the lucky individuals who were invited to be among the first 1,000 non-Google employees to pre-order Google Glass -- Google's much-anticipated computerized glasses. They can take pictures and video, give you directions when traveling and even translate foreign languages. With Glass, Google is aiming to disrupt mobile technology and go beyond just smartphones and tablets.

RhondaH said:
Maybe a dumb question but are the lower natural gas prices linked to fracking and if so isn't that environmentally questionable? I know that natural gas is clean burning, but I would hate to think we are messing up other natural resources (like fresh water) for growing demand.

Please consider the following 3 points:

Diesel extraction is at least as dirty (see: Niger delta, gulf of Mexico, Canadian tar sands, etc), it's not dirty locally anymore but it certainly was when Ohio was in our local oil boom. I'm not even going to mention the large scale local environmental damage from liquid fuel leaks/spills in Ohio. We're regulating those things much tighter than we used to but the damage is everywhere if you know where to look. OEPA has records if you're interested.

Diesel burning results in higher levels of particulate soot and VOC air pollution at point of use. Since VOCs produce tropospheric ozone (smog) on hot days diesel burning is a major contributor to the air quality warnings we get in Columbus on stagnant summer days. At least we've cut back on sulfur in diesel, but its still a huge problem for us.

It is also my personal opinion that it is more ethical to consume resources extracted in our own back yard than it is to export the environmental impact of our consumption to other places.

We at least have a vested interest in maintaining tight regulatory control over the activity that happens here, and we SHOULD keep applying pressure to tighten the environmental regulation of the oil/gas industry and make damned sure it's done correctly. However, in a lot of the places the oil companies, operating under little or corrupt regulatory control, are raping the environment beyond any hope of recovery for OUR benefit.

I'm not even going to go into wage inequality of foreign workers or community economic benefits, those are larger issues.

so, yeah, I'm far more comfortable with CNG than diesel, or the utter environmental horror-show that results from extracting and burning coal remotely for storing electricity (after losing half of the energy to power grid and storage inefficiency).

Speaking of electric storage vehicles: As long as we're getting electricity from coal the only real environmental advantage electric storage vehicles have is purely local, exporting the environmental cost to Appalachia, which cannot afford much more of it. (Rail is a different ballgame, because of the much lower energy used per passenger mile because its not using stored power, much lower rolling friction, efficiency of scale, etc).

Ironically they burn a lot of diesel fuel drilling and fracking for natural gas. The process also lets a lot of methane (a greenhouse gas) escape into the atmosphere.

Personally, I think it hides the environmental impact away from the cities where people can see it. I don't think this is much of a step forward.

You're damned if you do, damned if you don't with almost all forms of energy usage besides solar and wind. There's a electrified form of transit that starts with an r that uses a lot less energy (but still gets a portion of its energy from fracking) that also leads to development patterns that are less energy intensive.

But this is what we have now, so I support this change. Especially since it makes the buses quieter and less belchy.

Maybe a dumb question but are the lower natural gas prices linked to fracking and if so isn't that environmentally questionable? I know that natural gas is clean burning, but I would hate to think we are messing up other natural resources (like fresh water) for growing demand.

I don't think it's a dumb question, but I do think it's a can-of-worms question. The shortest message board length response I have the patience to generate is that 1) the fracking cat is already out of the bag so the effort now should be to continue to regulate/pressure the industry to proceed in a controlled and environmentally friendly way as possible (which would be much better than they're doing now), not necessarily to boycott natural gas and 2) note that the production of diesel fuel is nothing to nice either, so we might as well burn the cleaner of the two so at least we take it easy on the air while we're fucking something else up.
