I live in Delaware, OH. I found a couple places nearby for CO2:

Barley Hopsters in Delaware
ABCO Fire in Dublin on 161
Geer Gas in Columbus just off 315&Goodale

Barley Hopster is a local Homebrew supply store. They have co2, but they underfilled my tank. They do not have the proper equipment for a complete a proper fill.

ABCO Fire supplies CO2 for fire extinguishers etc. They also will fill a co2 tank for you. I have not tried them yet, but understand that most of these places that fill for fire extinguishers etc have the proper equipment and fill tanks properly.

Geer Gas is awesome! If you have the option, go there! These folks KNOW what they are doing and are very friendly. They also will fill your tank while you wait, which only takes a few minutes. They have very good prices and charge about 12 bucks for 5lbs of co2. You don't have to worry with them, they always make sure you get ALL your co2 per fill. I had one minor issue with one of my tanks, they not only replaced it for free, but upgraded it to an aluminum tank! They also threw in a free fill! Like I said, these guys are very friendly, very knowledgeable, and are the place to go for your co2!

@alexs, I'm not sure if you were referring to NPR's site or anywhere else, but I found a recent post on Foreign Policy on it: http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2013/01/31/palestinian_groups_call_for_sodastream_boycott

After digging a bit further, it's apparently a large international boycott movement, but I haven't had time to look at it yet.

the other new development is that they're no longer doing the carbonator exchange via UPS anymore. All the exchanges have to happen via a retail outlet. Haven't tried that yet, but it was a lot easier to just have the new ones show up at the door.

Here's a new wrinkle, Sodastream is catching heat for having a plant in the West Bank. I was listening to an NPR item on it, but it's not online yet.

FWIW the competitor I mentioned earlier is called "Mr Butler" --I asked my dad when I was at his house this past week.

I'm guessing this won't work with the syrups out there.

All any of these systems do is make carbonated water --there's no reason you couldn't mix any kind of syrup in with any of them.

There's apparently a way to get the sparkling water with just a tank, a glass bottle, and a special cap. I don't have a SodaStream, but it was interesting to watch. I'm guessing this won't work with the syrups out there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5OUbAGbS2o&feature=share&list=PL6YUqv3vrMsCnL_SX5nhL5Xu83CUBT9c3

I guess this video was made as part of an effort to boycott SodaStream, but the idea is cool, nonetheless.

Not that this helps anyone who already bought a SodaStream, but there is a competitor that uses plain canisters without any adapters needed. I'm not sure of the brand name, but my dad bought one about five years ago, and it still works great. He gets his canisters refilled at some paintball place.

So I bought one of these: http://www.criticalpaintball.com/SodaMod-p/sodastream-sodamod.htm and bought two of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0008G2WAW/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00.

I got the the 20oz tanks filled for $4 at Dicks Sporting Goods on Sawmill (go to the gun counter). Installing the adapter was super easy and the soda water doesn't taste any differently. While the adapter at $60 is expensive in the long run it's worth it!

Next time I get the urge to buy something crazy on the internet, it will definitely be that British syrup.

I'm not opposed to modifying the canister, but I don't want to mess it up if I can't find a reliable and cheap CO2 source somewhere around the city. Sodastream also seems to have some propaganda out about "food grade" CO2, which is not a thing. There is medical grade (which has uber-purity requirements) and everything else. Every fountain drink machine anywhere uses 'everything else.' However, I don't want to end up with someone who say, cleans out their C02 compressor with something terrible.

Whoa. That kinda just blew my mind a little. I've mostly been drinking the water plain sparkling, but when I do add syrup, it's some I've made. However, if I stumbled across that here in the states, it would be tempting, for sure.

It's extremely expensive at Bed Bath and Beyond. $15 to refill a canister of that size is price gouging, plain and simple. Something of that size would typically run $3-$5 for something like a paintball gun.

I'm not jury rigging my expensive soda machine thingie to maybe save a few bucks. More than likely, I'd blow myself up. I'll happily pay for the refill, even if it is "gouging."

If you have a sodastream you should over this flavor http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sodastream-500ml-12L-Sparkling-Mixer/dp/B004ERCS32

my relatives in England had a sodastream I would guess about 15 years ago, maybe a few more. (this took a long time to catch on in the US) and we would make this soda constantly. I don't know how to describe the flavor but it's one of a kind.

You can get refills at Bed Bath and Beyond. It's not expensive, and ain't no big thang.

Sidenote - I'm averaging 5-7 bottles a week of sparkling, and I got the unit right around Thanksgiving... still no need for a refill. So, it lasts a WHILE.

You'll need to alter your canister with something like this:

http://co2doctor.com/freedomvalvespec.htm

The Sodastream CO2 bottles have a booby trapped valve which prevents you from refilling it yourself without modifying it.

It's complete horsesh*t how much Sodastream marks up their CO2 canisters and refills, let alone the fact that they monopolize it by sabotaging their own equipment to prevent you from seeking out cheaper and more reasonable alternatives. I really enjoy my Sodastream but this fact alone is really bothering me the more I use it.

Let me know if you have any success, as I've been too lazy to order one of these mods and try it out.

My wife bought a Sodastream a few weeks ago. We were buying a lot of seltzer and creating a lot of plastic bottle waste, so it seemed legit. I am dreading the day that I have to refill the CO2 bottle, though, because it seems like such a ripoff. I've read that Sodastream puts an extra little widget in the valve that makes it difficult to refill without special technology, but many people around the internet claim to be getting them refilled at paintball arenas, welding shops, and the like. Does anyone refill their Sodastream at an alternate sort of locale?
