I had a ton of fun shooting this episode with Walker, and a huge thanks to him for being such a great sport. My recording equipment consists of:

1. My iPhone

So that's why the audio is a little poor - working on a better solution for the future. Hope you enjoy it!

Hey Tyler!

First... I just saw your video last night. Sorry to hear about the job. Hope the rebound is quick and for the better. ;)

As for the "tipping point"... I'm not sure if there's going to be just one thing... there's a lot of little things to address for a very wide variety of types of businesses.

From a governmental perspective, I think there's a lot of reform that needs to be done at a city level with regards to inspections, permits, procedures and obstructionism. The system is set up to check for problems and penalize businesses who miss the mark. It needs to be more helpful and offer more assistance in getting small business owners open and operational (and tax dollars flowing back to the city ferchristsake). There's a huge imbalance in the system where small business owners looking to open in older commercial or office spaces (ie: older than 20 years) are penalized due to legacy infrastructure issues and code updates. This makes it much easier for businesses to open in new/greenfield locations on the outskirts of town. That *must* be addressed, specifically for retail and restaurant/entertainment businesses.

From a support level, we need to be incubating like crazy. That's where we're really missing the mark right now. As I mentioned in the podcast, we have a few things going, primarily in the tech sector with Tech Columbus, the Dublin Entrepreneurial Center and INC@8000. What we don't have is incubation opportunities for other business sectors. There are a few things in the works, such as the commercial kitchen space at ECDI which may be coming online this summer, but we need dozens of these types of opportunities.

Take the example above that jpizzow mentioned: fashion/retail. (Which is an example I often use). We have a huge industry here with many national entities (The Limited, Abercrombie, DSW, Justice, etc). We have amazing institutions including the fashion merchandising program at OSU and the fashion design school at CCAD (which was recently ranked as one of the best in the WORLD).

Currently, when students graduate from those programs, they can either find a great corporate job here if that's what they want, or they can leave for LA/NYC/Milan/Paris/etc for more entrepreneurial opportunities if they don't want to take the harder route of striking out on their own here.

Imagine if we had a physical incubator space similar to Tech Columbus, but for the fashion/retail sector. Graduates could affordably rent workspace (drafting tables, storage facilities, workshop areas) as well as renting time on larger industrial manufacturing equipment that they could not afford to purchase on their own. A few dozen fashion entrepreneurs working in one space would lend itself to a world of creativity and collaboration. Additionally, a public-facing retail component could be run by fashion merchandising graduates who would be in charge of selling products, events, exhibitions and promoting the locally produced wares... maybe along the lines of a "North Market" layout, but for clothing.

What would this accomplish?

• Economic Development through new small business creation
• Retention of college graduates through opportunity creation
• Development of civic pride through new public institution
• Development of national identity by capitalizing upon existing retail resources
• Talent/recruiting pool for local corporations who are looking for latest trends in their industry, right in their own backyard
• Create a more interesting, vibrant place for everyone to live
• Potentially, add new retail to Downtown if located near CCAD

And so on and so forth...

I'm sort of rambling at this point, but you get the idea: Incubation!

Now let's multiply this formula across the prepared food sector, the growing alcohol sector, the logistics sector at Rickenbacker, the product and graphic design sector, industrial design at CCAD, green technology development, the culinary school at CSCC, artistic development at Wonderland, small manufacturing at the Idea Foundry, and so on and so forth. We have a lot of strengths we can play to. We just have to build some real, tangible opportunities where those strengths exist.

Some additional reading material:

http://www.inc.com/magazine/20100501/the-best-business-incubators.html

Walker, I think you're spot on of Columbus being on the cusp of an entrepreneurial center. You talked about where the gaps are holding us back, but what do you think is the 'tipping point' that pushes Columbus over the cusp? Is there anything specific that will do that?

She hit the nail on the head when talking about looking in your own back yard for oppuntities to grow certain business sectors. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this city does not do nearly enough to promote the huge fashion sector we have based here. It shocks me as well. We have all these companies based in the region within an industry that brings worldwide attention and billions upon billions of dollars in sales. Fashion is right up there with sports and music as one of the most prominent pieces of our cultural identities. You want to talk about making Columbus cool? Ok, take what we've got and capitalize on it, namely these companies which are conveniently located right in our back yard....

Yeah, she made some very good points. I wish we had an hour-long recording of the full panel discussion for more great info from the other folks on it.

Also... I was semi-familiar with the work of CEOs for Cities, which Julia is Director of External Affairs, but had no idea she was originally from Columbus (she's currently based in DC):

http://www.ceosforcities.org/about/staff/

Her presentation prior to the panel was a *really* well put together summary of everything Columbus as a city needs to be doing moving forward to prosper. She might be a good candidate for an interview soon. ;)

Terrific idea. There are a ton of super talented local female musicians. Look for an e-mail with some suggestions. I'll look forward to tuning in!

Hi! My name is Andi and I'm putting together a podcast called "Feminist Remix" (feministremix.tumblr.com) with Kimberly Springer, a professor at OSU. I'm looking to highlight local women musicians, headliners or bands with women leads as well as self identified LGBTQ performers. I've contacted a couple of community members who work closely in the Columbus music scene (whatever that means) but wanted to reach out even further.

--we hope to go "live(ish)" this Friday (3/11).

So far, I've compiled a wide array of genres but would like to add even more diversity. I hope to record a one hour spot once a week that will play alongside talk radio bits (that coincide with our mission-you can find that on the blog) from folks in and around Columbus and a "house/dance music" show, as well. With this, it is very likely I'll announce upcoming shows, events, community organizations, nerdy stuff.. etc.

Feel free to contact me at thefeministremix@gmail.com or reply to this thread if this sounds like something you would be interested in (or know of someone I can contact).

Also, I apparently like to use parentheses.

Thanks!
