What helped the station tremendously in the past year or so was that the mainstream, or what's left of it, came around to their format. People have grown tired of the nu-rock and nu-metal that dominated rock formats in the 2000s (man that stuff sucked!). Listen to the ads; CD102.5 didn't seem to get the corporate giants advertising with then nearly as much as they do now.

Very nice article. 102.5 is rare in the world of radio and we should be thankful.

Another interesting fact: It's not just our universities and young professionals that keep 102.5 afloat. It also has to do with the car-dependent nature of Columbus. There are many other cities with more YPs, but with mass transit being more prominent, the usage of FM radio declines in favor of mobile.

This then skews radio formats towards older and/or more working class audiences that like pop, country, talk, sports, and classic rock. Hence why you see so many of those stations.

Great story. I immediately fell in love with CD101 when I moved here, and this article sums up why.

I've lived in some other cities (Denver, Salt Lake, Lexington), but none of them had a station close to the same quality in terms of music and community involvement that CD101 provides.

/end gushing admiration

Celebrate the arts at the 47th Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival, Central Ohio’s premier one-day blind-juried arts festival showcasing nearly 200 fine art and fine craft artists from all over the country in a free alfresco interactive art space on Monday, September 2, 2013. Hosted by the City of Upper Arlington’s Cultural Arts Division and presented by Farmers Citizens Bank, the festival is held in Northam Park, 2070 Northam Road, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Annually the festival draws more than 25,000 people from all over to enjoy the variety of fine art and fine crafts from all over the country and Canada displaying, selling and demonstrating their wares, with returning award winners from last year. This event is made possible in part through the efforts of City staff and nearly 200 volunteers. Representing 20 different mediums including ceramics, drawing, fiber, jewelry, painting, glass, sculpture, photography and wood, the festival variety invites art enthusiasts and patrons to explore the arts in a neighborhood setting.

In a park close to home, encounter the arts through artists’ displays, hands-on art activities for children and adults, performing arts and culinary fare for all. The festival has grown over the past 47 years from a display of local artists to a well-renowned festival attracting artists and patrons from all over the country.

Children and adults enjoy local and regional performers at the Art Activities Stage featuring interactive music and performances. Create your own works of art through an offering of hands-on art activities in the Art Activities Area for children and adults. The main Performance Stage features a variety of up and coming local and regional performers. Satisfy your taste buds by enjoying a variety of refreshments from local food vendors, food trucks and food carts that will be available throughout the festival site.

Accessing the festival has become easier and greener for visitors with shuttle service provided from parking lots at the Kingsdale Shopping Center and the Pedal Instead program. Pedal Instead, offered at the festival again this year, encourages festival patrons to park bicycles in a free fenced bike corral on sturdy bike racks managed by festival volunteers.

Celebrate the tradition of the arts in Upper Arlington and enjoy your Labor Day with us at the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival. To learn more about the Festival visit the Upper Arlington Labor Day Arts Festival Web section at http://www.uaoh.net, or call 614-583-5310.

It's so funny that elemental fans now need to find sitters!

My favorite memory of elemental is that they would usually play some Kraftwerk, which everyone knows... is almost the only music I listen to (*embarrassing*)

Plus I have a friend coming in from Pittsburgh who might be down for some EDM.

"For me, ele_mental really allowed me a forum and venue to bring things together not only to benefit my own growth, but to nurture growth in others. I think its impact on Columbus, and other places here and there, is almost undetectable, but is secretly incalculable. No one did anything even remotely resembling what we were doing at the time, and few have even tried since. The reason it didn’t leave much of a visible impact was because it wasn’t really designed to. It lived on (and lives on) in the idea of collaboration and sharing itself, rather than in some need to prove how influential we were. We’ve never lived in the past, or in the need to prove anything, and we’re not about to start doing that now, even as we’re entering a new phase of understanding our own history." -Ed Luna
