Ohio artist Matt Kish grew up with two obsessions: the novel Moby-Dick and images.

In August 2009, he combined his two loves when he started illustrating the Herman Melville classic, creating an image a day over the next 18 months based on text selected from every page of the 552-page Signet Classics paperback edition.

The resulting book, Moby-Dick in Pictures: One Drawing for Every Page, has been featured on Oprah.com and TheAtlantic.com.

Learn more about the project and Kish's artistic process during "The Art of Illustration." The workshop will start at 2 pm this Saturday (Oct. 20) at Old Worthington Library, 820 High St. Registration is required for the free event; call 614-807-2626.

Columbus Civic Theater presents Moby Dick: Rehearsed, Orson Welles's adaptation of Melville's classic tale, opening March 22nd at the Civic.

This bare-bones adaptation of the epic novel opens with a turn-of-the-century acting company about to rehearse their production of King Lear, when they are unexpectedly handed a stage script for Moby Dick instead. Welles's adaptation relies on limited stagecraft; sets and props are deliberately minimal, costumes represent the street or rehearsal clothes of the acting company members. The story is told through the actors' words only, and the audience's imagination is engaged to bring the sweeping tale to life.

Moby Dick: Rehearsed performs Thursday through Saturday nights at 8:00pm and Sundays at 2:00pm through April 15 at the Civic. Located in Clintonville at 3837 Indianola Ave., at the corner of Blenheim Rd., just south of Cooke. Ample parking. Easy access from I-71 via the North Broadway or Cooke exits. Pubtrans: COTA route 4 (Indianola/Parsons) has stops nearly in front of us. Call (614) 447-PLAY (7529) to make reservations, or purchase tickets online at our website. $20/17.50 (+fee online, none of which goes to the Civic). Group rates available. Columbus Civic Theater is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization.
