Hamsterdam said:
"This makes a very strong case for the return of public access television to Columbus: the people need alternative mass media outlets."

All 17 people who would watch the channel probably agree with you.

And yet thousands and thousands of people know who Damon Zex is....

Public Access - the channel no one watches but EVERYONE sees.

Youtube is NOT a substitute for Public Access TELEVISION. Internet will over run TV at some point, but we ain't there yet. The city takes in MILLIONS of $$$ from franchise fees from the cable companies who charge US for that, then don't give us the voice, the place on the television where we can be heard about whatever anyone wants to talk about. And it was guaranteed a channel - now just a bulletin board that lists events only.

Getting your Youtube channel seen and heard in your local area is about as likely as getting a single grain of sand seen out of the desert.

SLOW THE PRESSES!
by Wendell Cox 05/11/2013

It has been a difficult time for newspapers. The industry has experienced serious challenges due to multiple factors going back at least to the early 1960s when the three major television networks began their extensive and widely popular evening news programs, with the likes of Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley.

The rise of the Internet over the last two decades has posed a much larger challenge. More people were able to access more interactive news sources, including the Internet editions of major newspapers, nearly all of which were free in the beginning. Then there was Apple, with its ground-breaking iPad which made accessing news sources more user-friendly. Newspapers competed hard to design their own applications, which often required paid subscriptions. Of course, Ipad has competitors now and many newspapers have implemented paid firewalls for their Internet sites.

JOHN CARDENAS NAMED PRESIDENT/GENERAL MANAGER OF WBNS-TV AND VICE PRESIDENT OF NEWS FOR DISPATCH BROADCAST GROUP

COLUMBUS, OH.—Michael J. Fiorile, CEO and President of The Dispatch Printing Company and Vice Chairman/CEO of Dispatch Broadcast Group today announced John Cardenas has been named President and General Manager of WBNS-10TV and Vice President of News for Dispatch Broadcast Group. Cardenas will replace the retiring station president Tom Griesdorn on June 10 and returns to the station where Cardenas had been News Director.

"John has done an outstanding job in both Indianapolis and Columbus over the past 14 years," said Fiorile. "His leadership, outstanding record of success and passion for journalism make him the perfect choice to take the reins of market-leader WBNS-TV. We are thrilled that John will be returning to Columbus where I’m sure he will build upon the market leadership of 10TV and will take the executive lead of our broadcast news operations in Columbus and Indianapolis."

Cardenas, 48, joined the executive ranks of Dispatch Broadcast Group in 1999. He was News Director at WBNS-10TV for 11 years. He was transferred to WTHR-TV, the company’s NBC affiliate in Indianapolis, and WALV (The SkyTrak Weather Network) in June of 2010 where he began as the station’s Vice President and General Manager before being named President last year. During Cardenas’ tenure in Columbus and Indianapolis, the stations consistently ranked number one in every major newscast time period year after year.

“I’ve been privileged to work with some of the nation’s best broadcasters and TV journalists during my time in Indianapolis and Columbus,” said Cardenas. “It’s an honor to come back home to Columbus, yet still be involved in the award-winning journalism being done at both stations.”

The national Broadcasting and Cable magazine named Cardenas its 2011 “Local TV Executive of the Year.”

In terms of other awards won during Cardenas’ tenure:

WTHR earned numerous local, regional and national awards including the National Edward R. Murrow for Overall Excellence, two George Foster Peabody awards and the prestigious duPont-Columbia award for investigative journalism.

Cardenas was News Director in Columbus when the station won the national Edward R. Murrow award for Best Newscast in the country in 2008. WBNS-TV has been recognized with more than 20 Edward R. Murrow awards and dozens of regional Emmy awards in a variety of categories. Cardenas himself won three Emmys.

Prior to working for Dispatch Broadcast Group, John was also news director at KPHO in Phoenix (1996-1999) and held other news management positions at stations in San Diego and Norfolk, Virginia.

Cardenas was born in La Paz, Bolivia, and is fluent in both English and Spanish. He and his wife, Nancy, have two children.

Press Release:
WBNS-10TV President and General Manager Thomas C. Griesdorn to Retire

Columbus, Ohio – Tom Griesdorn, WBNS-10TV President /General Manager and Chief Revenue Officer of The Dispatch Printing Company, announced his intention to retire on Friday, May 31, 2013. Griesdorn has led the television station since 1999.

Griesdorn began his broadcasting career as Manager of Sales and Financial Controls at WLS-TV (ABC) in Chicago. Following WLS-TV, he moved to Detroit’s WXYZ-TV, where he eventually was promoted to the position of General Manager. The native of Maria Stein, Ohio, returned to his home state of Ohio in 1995 when he became VP and GM of WOIO/WUAB-TV in Cleveland.

Griesdorn, a graduate of The Ohio State University, displayed a deep commitment to the central Ohio community service during his 15 years at 10TV. He currently serves as Chairman of the Ohio Association of Broadcasters and has served on the boards of the United Way of Central Ohio, North Market Development Authority, Goodwill Columbus, The Columbus Metropolitan Club, ProMusica and Just Think, Inc. Now my heart is telling me it’s time to settle down and enjoy life. But where ever I go, that heart will hold a special place for WBNS, The Dispatch Printing Company, and the amazing people I’ve been privileged to call my ‘work’ family and my friends.”

“WBNS-10TV owes Tom Griesdorn a great debt,” said Michael J. Fiorile, CEO and President of The Dispatch Printing Company. “He has been a tremendous leader who returned the station to a position of market leadership and maintained that dominance for many, many years. He hired a team of executives and newscasters who are among the best in our industry. He leaves a great legacy as he begins the next chapter of his life.”

Looks like more shenanigans going on with the bid D's website. It was my understanding that you could hit the website 10 times before it would ask you to buy a digital subscription and then of course you would simply delete your cookies to reset. Now whenever I go to the site I see that it immediately refreshes twice doubling the count.

Just checked, I'm not seeing this behavior. Maybe it was just glitched.

Also, they seem to conveniently disable their online customer service whenever they have an issue getting the hardcopy out on time in the morning preventing you from getting your account credited. It was way late this morning and sure enough their online app was crashing. Not the first time this has happened.

Columbus Alive only has featured ones and is tough to navigate. CU only lists some of the bands in the mega weekend. Looks like Donewaiting is closing up shop also.
