I went to see it for the first time last weekend because that was the first weekend my free passes were valid for it. Usually that means I have the theater almost all to myself, on one of the last few weekends before a movie stops showing. This time, the house was at least 75% full, and it was definitely worth it. I admit actually being surprised that the rumors that Ledger did a good job basically held up; the last thing I saw him in was "The Brothers Grimm," which was OK but not great.
It's being re-released nationwide in January. It's going to generate so much dough.

I went to go see it again last night, this time in IMAX.

I was a little disappointed, basically because I didn't quite understand what I was getting. To me, IMAX had always meant the domed theaters you typically see at science museums and the like. I had never seen a Hollywood IMAX film.

As it turns out, the domed theaters aren't actually IMAX, I guess they're either called OMNIMAX or IMAX Dome.

But that's my problem, not the film's.

IMAX itself supposedly has a much higher resolution based on the size of the film used etc, but I don't know that I was capable of noticing that on its own. Perhaps side by side, or a back to back comparison would have made it more obvious, but I hadn't seen the movie since opening weekend.

The one thing that did make it worth it, was that it was possible to get a better look at the license plates on the vehicles. I had heard a lot of people complain about the fact that they obviously used Chicago as Gotham City, and that the license plates were Illinois plates. BUT, having gotten a good look at them in IMAX, even though the plates are colored similarly to those from Illinois, they actually say Gotham on them.

Overall, still a good experience. I just don't know that I'll be paying the $3 premium for IMAX any time in the near future.

Awesome!

I'd like to see The Joker return in the next one as originally intended, but it would only work if Nolan got a brilliant actor who could channel what Ledger did, but also make the role his own. And be just as good.

The character of The Joker deserves another film. As sad as ledgers passing was and as brilliant as he was in the role, it could be successfully recast. Think De Niro as Don Corleone in The Godfather part two, replacing Brando.

I'd also really love to see The Penguin done in a manner true to his earlier appearnces. In his first few years in the comics, The Penguin was a great villain, really brilliant, cruel, always killing people, very lethal, and usually outsmarting Batman 7 or eight times before being captured. I'd like to see that Penguin on screen.

But I think that god-awful Halle Berry movie is still too recent (2004) to give that character a proper reboot.

Perhaps they should do something really radical, and take the next movie in a Brokeback-Mountain sort of direction.

Hey, there's a precedent in the comics:

I saw the regular version over the weekend, but I want to go back and see the IMAX one, see how it compares. I think it would be cool to see it in the IMAX format that's for sure.

I saw the IMAX one last night. The IMAX scenes were stunning. Mainly the big shots of Hong Kong, Chicago-hattan, and the pacific ocean. Very high definition too, it was super cool.

I loved the movie. I agree with some of the problems listed, but not all. Maggie was fine I thought, I was sad when she died. Eckhart was surprisingly awesome. Not much left to be said about Ledger. So many little great things about that performance. Things like the way he walks away from the hospital when it's blowing up. All the little ticks. And how he managed to be funny but terrifying at the same time.

Nit picks for me were, some of the editing was a bit of a mess. Mainly the last scene where Batman is fighting all those goons with the sonar turned on. And something got cut when he saves Rachel when the joker lets her fall out the window. What happened to the rest of the guests at the party? The Joker just left?

I think what happened with Batman going after Rachel: The Joker switched the addresses. Batman yells "I'm going after Rachel" so Gordon goes after Dent. That was kind of like Silence of the Lambs where you expect Batman to burst in on Rachel, but it's Harvey instead.

The Bat Bike or whatever was super bad ass too. Some great audience reaction when he is doing all those crazy tricks with it.

I also could of used a bit more Bale in this. It was almost like he was more of a supporting actor in this. I loved how he worked with the cops though. How he wasn't really a traditional superhero, just a super bad ass covert SWAT team member.

I also loved the little Jokers theme they would play, just like that one oscillating note when he was on screen. Very simple but effective.

Overall, I was more than happy with this. I don't know if it will win any awards, but I don't really care. I'm just glad I got to see such a dark/bad ass Batman movie in my life time.

As for a sequel....I almost hope they just stop here. This will be hard to top. But as much money as this is making, it will almost certainly have one. For now, I'll just enjoy the moment.

I absolutley loved how it ended too. Gordon's little monologue, with Batman riding out of the Tunnel, the music swells, and Gordon calls him "a Dark Knight". So fucking cool.

Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now...and so we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not a hero. He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector...a dark knight.

Some of the most inspired verbal abuse I've ever been on the receiving end of came from Brits. Perhaps because they can't vent there, they've had plenty of time to think about it for when they go abroad?

Maybe Bale had been spending too much time in LA?
