			<title>Gateway Film Center on "The Arena Grand Theatre Closing"</title>
			<link>http://www.columbusunderground.com/forums/topic/the-arena-grand-theatre-closing#post-503856</link>

			<description>&#60;p&#62;I was very sad to hear that the Arena Grand Movie Theatre, also a locally owned, independent cinema, will be closing its doors next week.  Columbus continues to be a challenging market for independent theaters, and the arrival of another national chain like Studio Movie Grill will certainly not help foster interesting film opportunities for local moviegoers. In addition to the Hollywood blockbusters that we all enjoy (to say that our staff is simply excited about MAN OF STEEL, for example, would be a gross understatement), I believe that it is incredibly important to our city to offer a diverse selection of films—including low-budget indies, documentaries, and locally-produced movies—in an uniquely local cinema environment. This makes the loss of cinemas like the Arena Grand even greater.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;To show our allegiance to those who find themselves without a favorite movie theater today as well as those who want to support local business, the Gateway Film Center will be giving all patrons who present their Arena Grand Movie Theatre loyalty card a $6.50 ticket and a free 32oz popcorn starting today and through the month of June.&#60;/p&#62;

			<description>&#60;p&#62;The film, which has been selling out theaters from coast to coast on its current tour, has won numerous awards at film festivals all over the world, “is an up-close look at what RAAM riders go through,” says Stephen Auerbach, the director and producer of Bicycle Dreams. “They deal with searing desert heat, agonizing mountain climbs, and endless stretches of open road. And they do it all while battling extreme exhaustion and sleep deprivation. It’s a great subject for a film.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;“Bicycle Dreams is a spectacular and heartfelt film that offers a riveting portrait of extreme courage in the face of inhuman obstacles,” writes TheLoveOfMovies.com. “It is an artistic triumph that renewed my belief in the power of desire and the strength of the human will.”&#60;br /&#62;
“We are very excited to be able to bring Bicycle Dreams to so many locations along the route that have never had access to the film before,” says Auerbach. “Viewers will be overwhelmed by the amount of pain and suffering these riders go through.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;To capture the mammoth scope of the race, Auerbach worked around the clock with a complement of 18 cameras. Embedded camera operators traveled inside the racers’ support crew vehicles, gaining unprecedented access to the cyclists and their teams. Their footage captured emotional and physical breakdowns, late-night strategy sessions, and great moments of personal triumph, all in intimate detail. Auerbach then took on the enormous task of editing hundreds of hours of material and forming it into a powerful and inspiring look inside the most difficult race on the planet.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Bicycle Dreams has won major awards at the Fallbrook and Breckenridge film festivals, as well as the Yosemite, Grand Rapids, Red Rock and All Sports LA film festivals, among many others. Most recently the film added the Best Foreign Film trophy from the Krasnogorski International Festival of Sports Films in Moscow and was also invited to be included in the 2011 World Cinema Showcase in New Zealand as well as the Mountain Film Festival in Istanbul, Turkey. And before that it made its Australian debut at the Big Pond Film Festival in Adelaide.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Critical acclaim for the film continues to pour in from all sources.&#60;br /&#62;
“An astonishing documentary,” declares Pez Cycling. “This film is a ride of many stark contrasts; when it ended I felt both shattered and triumphant. I realized I was experiencing its genius. A central theme of Bicycle Dreams is the profoundly inspiring strength of the human in facing monumental challenge and tragedy. Bicycle Dreams is a race of truth.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;“This film isn’t for those who want to shy away from the tragic side of the human experience, unwilling to risk the cracking of their shell of denial, not willing to risk their coping mechanism,” writes Cycling-Review.com. “Bicycle Dreams captures the human condition like few other films. Bicycle Dreams moves us to break through the barrier of the fear of death. I have seldom found a film that captures this ‘life drama’ as powerfully as does Bicycle Dreams.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Adds Podium Café, “Bicycle Dreams is the ultimate inner journey. If you thought the life of a cyclist was an internal struggle, wait until you see what Auerbach unearths in this film. Bicycle Dreams is an unprecedented exploration of the subject of the suffering on the bike.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;About.com writes, “As we fall deeper and deeper into Bicycle Dreams, what we witness grows more terrifying, yet more compelling. Auerbach’s masterful direction exposes the raw lessons that drive people to push beyond the limits of human endurance. Revealing what lies at the heart of every impossible human endeavor is what Bicycle Dreams is all about.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;And finally, Bicycle Touring Pro comments, “If you've ever dreamed of challenging yourself to a place far beyond what you previously thought was possible, Bicycle Dreams is a film you must see. It’s beautiful, thought provoking, exciting, emotional and scary. The experience of watching this film will leave you with a new perspective on life that will remain with you for a very long time to come.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Bicycle Dreams also has been named one of the top 10 adventure films of all time by both The Matador Network and Playground Magazine, calling it the best bicycle film since “Breaking Away.”&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Pelotonia is a grass roots bike tour with one goal: to end cancer. Pelotonia raises money for innovative and life saving cancer research at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center- James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Driven by the passion of its cyclists and volunteers, and their family and friends, Pelotonia's annual cycling experience will be a place of hope, energy and determination. Leveraging Netjets' transformational gift, Pelotonia directs 100% of every dollar raised to research. It is a community of people coming together to chase down cancer and defeat it.&#34;&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;&#60;em&#62;For the fourth year in a row, all 15 Oscar nominated shorts – animated, live action, and documentary – will find screen time at the Gateway Film Center (1550 N. High St). The run is a Gateway exclusive and an excellent opportunity for Oscar completists to get a chance to peek at some nominees that could otherwise go unseen.&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;/em&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
&#60;em&#62;According to Gateway president Chris Hamel, his theater gets the exclusive run because the series has done well for the theater.&#60;br /&#62;

			<description>&#60;p&#62;Delineations&#60;br /&#62;
A solo exhibit by Megan Mosholder&#60;br /&#62;
Curated by Amy Leibrand&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Delineations is a visionary exhibition created by artist Megan Mosholder in response to the Ohio Art League gallery space. The installation is constructed with paintings and interactive sculptural drawing, which intends to bring attention to the opacity between social classes in our culture. Scrutiny of social division is encouraged as the viewer moves in and around three-dimensional drawings built out of braided mason twine and light.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Mosholder uses a hands-on approach to examine spatial elements through site-specific visual research. Delineations is a multi-sensory, participatory experience; lines of twine extending from floor to ceiling and between walls expand and contract in a visually manipulative manner, engulfing the viewer. Paintings created in reaction to the spatial elements provide an unspoken dialogue between the sculptural drawings and the participant. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Opening reception: January 3, 5-8 pm (light refreshments)&#60;br /&#62;
Show dates: January 3-28, 2013&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Ohio Art League Gallery&#60;br /&#62;
1552 North High Street, Columbus, OH&#60;br /&#62;
Gallery hours: M-W 12-6 pm; R-Sa 12-8 pm&#60;/p&#62;

			<description>&#60;p&#62;Yes, I don't know that you can credit any one food establishment for the &#34;invention&#34; of the grilled cheese sandwich, or even a panini, if you prefer.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Now admittedly, you can have one place do it better than others. I shall reserve judgement on that for now.

&#60;p&#62;&#60;em&#62;By many accounts, Melt Bar &#38;amp; Grilled’s cheese stands alone.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;The Cleveland-based restaurant, which specializes in gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, has been racking up awards, accolades and television appearances since owner Matt Fish opened his first Melt in 2006. Now at four restaurants (including one across from the next World of Beer tavern), Fish is ready to show Columbusites what we’ve been missing. Fish let it slip that Columbus was in his plans at the recent opening of his Mentor restaurant.&#60;/em&#62;&#60;/p&#62;

&#60;p&#62;Discover the groundbreaking and utterly American duo of designers &#60;strong&#62;Charles and Ray Eames&#60;/strong&#62;, at this one-time-only screening of &#60;strong&#62;EAMES: The Architect and the Painter — introduced by the film's producer&#60;/strong&#62;.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;CSCA is proud to bring you this exclusive event. Enjoy the imagination and charm of these icons on the big screen, then learn more about documentary filmmaking with veteran Bill Jersey, who will discuss his work after the movie. It's an event you simply can't miss.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;About the Film&#60;br /&#62;
The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames are widely regarded as among America's most important designers. Best known for their mid-century plywood and fiberglass furniture, the Eames Office also created a extraordinary variety of other work, including photography, interiors, multimedia exhibits, graphics, games, medical devices, films and toys. &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Remarkably, their personal lives and influence on significant trends in American life – from the development of modernism, to the rise of the computer age – has been less widely understood. Narrated by James Franco, EAMES: The Architect and the Painter is the first fi lm since their deaths dedicated to these creative geniuses and their work.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;&#60;strong&#62;MEET THE DIRECTOR!&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;About Bill Jersey&#60;/strong&#62;&#60;br /&#62;
Bill Jersey has produced documentaries for more than 40 years. His body of work includes two Academy Award nominees: A Time for Burning, on race relations in America, and Superchief, on the life and legacy Chief Justice Earl Warren. His other award-winning productions include The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow series (George Foster Peabody Award), Children of Violence (Emmy), Renaissance (Emmy nomination), Faces of the Enemy (Emmy nomination), Loyalty and Betrayal (Emmy), and The Making of Amadeus.&#60;/p&#62;

			<description>&#60;p&#62;Wow. That might be the best day ever.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Sidenote - my brain read that title first as &#34;Happy Butthurt Day&#34; which is also awesome, but totally different.
