Always good to be looking for improved technologies with energy (and its cost) an important factor in world economies.

But let's not forget that nuclear is and alsways has been a safe, clean energy technology. Nobody died from radiation at Fukushima. The two other largest nuclear energy prodcuers, France and the U.S., have stellar safety records in their nuclear industries.

True as far as they go. But those safety measures come at incredibly high prices, and even the nuclear industries of major nations are not immune to cost pressures. One of the reasons Fukushima Daiichi was such a serious problem (even if there were no direct fatalities, the economic and cultural damage was significant) was that the reactors were past the end of their rated operating lives. (Though admittedly, even a brand new reactor might not have survived the combination earthquake-tsunami-landslide that hit Fukushima.)

Here is an exciting new proposal for reactor design. It uses reactor waste as fuel; pulls most of the energy out of its fuel; produces minimal amounts of waste that is radioactive for merely hundreds of years;p and has built in safety features that are idiot proof.

Fukushima keeps getting scarier. Check out this story. Says that Japan is making plans to evacuate all its citizens to either the Kuril Islands or for China to absorb the Japanese people. That's a lot of people on a move.

Personally, I just don't see the problem with wind power. What is so difficult about making power for "free" that has zero environmental impact and makes considerable power?

In addition to Pedex's comments - wind power does have environmental impact, in regards to it's footprint (huge) and that it does mess with birds significantly.

It is possible to get considerable power from wind, but it takes a huge amount of land to accomplish the task. And, it has to be land where the wind blows in a way that will function best.

And then there's the fact that the wind generally blows the most when it is least needed - at night, or when it's cool. If we had a way to store the electricity that is generated from wind, THEN we'd have something.

I just saw this and found it interesting, I've heard that our wars in Iraq/Afghanistan were actually a ruse to get rid of our depleted uranium that was going to otherwise cost us trillions to deal with.

David Ross
"War. We think of brave men (and usually not the women who increasingly find themselves in actual combat) clashing with each other in something between a glorious movie about the Spartans and a NLF football game. Modern warfare is technologically based and one often survives (more or less) combat without ever seeing the "enemies." You move around pieces of a map occupying, but rarely actually holding onto, grid points on a map – the sacrifice is to momentarily claim control of this area and then give it up and return to base. The “combat” is to survive a hail of shredded steel and depleted uranium, buried bombs and land mines, napalm (jellied gasoline that sticks to you and other incendiaries) and so on.
.
Each of our modern wars has its signature poison. In World War 1 it was chlorine and phosgene gas which literally disintegrated the lungs on a scale ranging from mild irritation to death from coughing up blood and finally drowning in your own fluids as the lings filled with liquid in a vain effort to cleanse themselves. What a wonderful weapon! Heavier than air, it settled deep in the trenches and underground bunkers that protected the soldiers from the carnage of the huge cannons above. “Nowhere to run to, nowhere to hide.” In the end, the gas weapons proved so horrible that nations gave them up – even Hitler during the final collapse of his beloved Third Reich said NO to gas – he remembered his experiences with gas in WW1.
.
In WW2, we favored incendiaries like napalm and thermite – entire cities and most of the people in them were simply burned to death. The grandest incendiary of them all was the Atomic Bomb – an entire city could now be incinerated by dropping a single bomb with the only risk being the possibility of having a single plane shot down instead of the dozens so often lost in air raids. More Japanese have died from the results of radiation poisoning than died from the actual explosions themselves. And they are still to this day dying and suffering from it and so are generations of their children who inherited the genetic defects induced by radiation exposure – we should have learned something.
.
In Vietnam, we used Agent Orange to kill all vegetation in entire areas of the country to deny our “enemy” the benefit of being able to hide from us. We were told it only affected green plants, not people. They knew this wasn’t true – they lied to us and the world. Several generations of Vietnamese, Laotians and Cambodians have now have their children devastated by genetic defects and we have done nothing to help them. Because we operated in these areas, our own people also have seen many of their children suffer from the same mutations. The use of such chemicals is illegal, is a war crime under international and U.S. law, but no one is bringing America before the World Court to answer for this. America does as it pleases.
.
In the Balkans and Middle East, depleted uranium is the signature toxin. It solves the problem of how to profitably dispose of a whole class of nuclear waste while simultaneously providing a weapon that can literally cut through steel and concrete. It causes genetic mutations and, as usual, our own soldiers are no more immune to this than the soldiers on the other side and, of course, the civilians who will continue to live in these toxic super dumps long after the soldiers we attacked have moved on. Again, under the Laws of Warfare, this weapon is illegal but don’t hold your breath waiting for War Crimes Trials – America does as it pleases.
.
I have posted on this a lot and depleted uranium can be goggled. Like Agent Orange, our government says “don’t worry – there is no evidence for what you claim.” Just as they did with Agent Orange, they are lying and both they and we know it. My friend Monique D’hooghe has created two FB pages called Depleted Uranium Victims and Shock and Awe, the Legacy of These Wars where you can learn about and keep current on this issue and perhaps make a contribution towards ending this inhumanity. No one on FB is more dedicated to their cause than Monique – this is her life except when she is out in the streets doing actions against war, for Palestine and so on. Her work is well worth following and we need more like her."

This looks like an interesting read:
Personally I don't find Fukishima to be half the catastrophe Chernobyl was, but they need to just eliminate nuclear power altogether. The risk is not even remotely worth the reward.

Personally, I just don't see the problem with wind power. What is so difficult about making power for "free" that has zero environmental impact and makes considerable power?

because in a grid tied system especially one like the US uses most of the power is wasted and also it is unable to be balanced once it reaches any significant amount

wind power works best either in situ or in combination with other systems like tying it into the water system which can be used to balance the intermittent nature of wind power

a major major change in mindset in the US is going to be needed if any sort of real transition from fossil fuels to something else is gonna happen and it means abandoning all the assumptions most people have and also dumping everything deemed as normal and taken for granted

long distance remote power generation aka our grid system that wastes 65% of its power inputs from start to end user simply won't work

some nations like Germany are already finding this out the hard way

the US hasn't been a very good steward or world example for nuclear power that's for sure

what's even more ironic is that in an actual free market nuclear power doesn't work

Some simpletons sporting "Clean Coal" shirts showed up at Obama's visit to OSU with signs reading things like "Green Power only puts us in debt" and had the temerity to say that "At least nuclear power works". Uh, yeah. We see how well that nuclear power is working for us, and as if that Fukushima clean-up or the BP cleanup doesn't have a trillion dollar debt of a price tag that is incalculable and often forgiven by liability limits after so many billions. Tell the people in Masdar http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masdar_City, Germany (largest consumer of solar power), California, or the people who have solar in Ohio even, that it doesn't work. (face palm)

Meanwhile the nuclear catastrophe in Japan continues:

Very high radiation, little water in Japan reactor

By MARI YAMAGUCHI, Associated Press – Mar 27, 2012

TOKYO (AP) — One of Japan's crippled nuclear reactors still has fatally high radiation levels and hardly any water to cool it, according to an internal examination that renews doubts about the plant's stability.

A tool equipped with a tiny video camera, a thermometer, a dosimeter and a water gauge was used to assess damage inside the No. 2 reactor's containment chamber for the second time since the tsunami swept into the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant a year ago.

The data collected Tuesday showed the damage from the disaster was so severe, the plant operator will have to develop special equipment and technology to tolerate the harsh environment and decommission the plant, a process expected to last decades.
