The rate at which new Columbus microbreweries are launching has slowed in 2013, but don’t consider this launch cycle over just yet. Craig O’Herron is ready to throw his hat into the ring with the announcement of Sideswipe Brewing. Located just southwest of Grandview Heights, Sideswipe will launch later this summer as a production brewery with products available for purchase in nearby craft beer-friendly venues.

via release:
Ohio Brew Week: 8 Years of Celebrating Ohio Craft Brew Excellence

In its 8th year of celebrating Ohio craft brew excellence, Ohio Brew Week is hosting more events and more breweries than ever before. More than 40 Ohio craft breweries, nine new ones, are bringing more than 200 craft brews to Athens, Ohio June 21-29, 2013. Taps in 33 venues flow with original Ohio craft brews during the eight-day event. Visitors from all over the U.S. come to Athens and enjoy craft brew dinners, formal beer tastings, to meet a brewer and to learn about Ohio’s growth in the craft brew industry.

Events feature locally-produced foods, made or paired with craft brews, brewers’ talks, new beer debuts, beer & cheese pairings and a nano brewing symposium.

The week kicks off 5 p.m., Friday, June 21 with a Rock ‘n’ Roast bbq at the Ohio University Inn.

Two restaurants on Sunday, June 23 host brew brunch and brew dinners, Sol Restaurant (Cuban food) and The Pub, beer infused buffet where Keynote speaker Bill Metzger will talk about his experiences as a publisher of Brewing News newspapers.

The Official Keg Tap Ceremony starts at 6 p.m., Monday, June 24.

The Athens Cuisine Showcase 6 p.m., Tuesday, June 25 features locally-grown foods made with craft beer in a friendly competition cook-off. Ticket holders get to sample gourmet dishes and then enjoy The Stars of Illusion Hollywood impersonators.

New events to OBW this year highlight some of the unusual places and tales of the Athens Area.

The Athens County Museum and Historical Society with OBW host the first Historical Walking Tour of Pubs & Taverns on MWF, 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Interpretative actors may pop out of the woodwork to tell tales of Athens’ Uptown’s colorful history. The popular Haunted Hocking bus tour returns on Thursday, June 27. Ticket holders ride a bus and listen to ghost experts Pat and Jeannette Quakenbush share stories of the most haunted places in the area and try out ghost hunting gear. Tours are at 3:30 and 6 p.m.

Have you ever had a craft beer in a castle? On Thursday, a special lunch and early evening light dinner will be hosted at Ravenwood Castle in New Plymouth. This castle, owned by Pam and Jim Rigg, serves as a bed & breakfast with a pub. A bus takes patrons to and from Athens for both meals where new breweries’ beers will be sampled.

The 8th Brew BQ on Friday, June 28 features more activities and live music as well as a wide variety of Brew BQ. Take part in a Barleyhole Competition, see the Athens Lion’s Club antique car show, enter you dog in the Dog Days of Summer Talent Show, enjoy Ohio craft beer in the beer garden while listening to local bands, Russel P. Lewis, Thomas Dirk, and then The Bob Stewart Band.

Also new this year is the OBW “The Last Call” Brews on the Block Finale. The north end of Court Street in Uptown Athens will be closed for live music of 3 p.m. Leave Corp (www.leavecorp.com); 4:30 Jen Miller with the Keg Dwellers; 6:15 Greg O’Brien & the Spoo Doo Cadillacs and at 7:45 Slater Brothers (www.slaterbrothersband.com). Art and craft booths will line the street along with regional food vendors. An arts fair will also take place during this event.

Dan Gates, executive director of OBW, said, “This is like the state fair of Ohio craft brews. All the breweries in the state enjoy being part of OBW and supporting an event that really shows off their craft and talent.” Athens is geared up for this year’s crowds, Gates said. “Our unique community offers the most unusual setting for trying all these excellent craft brews. You don’t really have to drive, the bartenders are excited for OBW, and the brewers love to chat with craft beer fans.”

The Casa Cantina hosts a brewers forum, formal beer dinners, beer & cheese tastings and specialty foods all week. Jackie O’s Pub & Brewery, the only brewery in Athens has formal tastings, debuts its new tasting room, and prepares to can its first craft brews, along with meet the brewer events and a vast selection of new brews from brewer Brad Clark. You’ll want to attend the Ms. Plumber’s Crack competition at 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 27 at the Smiling Skull, it’s always exciting. There will be exceptional Ladies’ Nights, and special sampling nights of the new breweries in the state.

A full schedule of OBW events, beers and breweries coming and the food selections is at, http://www.ohiobrewweek.com/schedule. Tickets to events that require them are available online as well; many events do not require tickets, patrons purchase beer and food as they enjoy the event.

Ah, New Glarus... I hope to get lucky with the ticket lottery for this year's Great Taste of the Midwest beer fest in Madison (2nd Saturday in August), arguably, the best beer festival in the country (not the biggest, mind you). Assuming everything works out, I'll be returning from Madison with a goodly amount of WI Belgian Red and Raspberry Tart tucked away in the car.

a couple of good MSP brewers:
Lucid - http://www.lucidbrewing.com/#our-beer
I really like their Craig's Ale, which is a Rye made for Craig, who apparently was the single largest contributor to their kickstarter campaign.

Indeed Brewing - http://www.indeedbrewing.com/beers/
Daytripper APA is good.

Steel Toe - http://www.steeltoebrewing.com/
Size 7 or Size 11 IPA

and to me the classic is always St Paul's Summit Brewing - http://www.summitbrewing.com/

Republic is a good beer bar (one near campus and one in Uptown), Muddy Waters on Lyndale near Uptown has a nice draught list, and the Public House downtown. It all really depends on where you're staying and what your transportation options are? Minneapolis is nice downtown, but it really is a city of neighborhoods.

Mister, thanks a lot. I found some MN "best ofs" on ratebeer.com but your link has a nice range of recommendations.

Matt, I'm a big fan of New Glarus and get a couple pickups annually from friends traveling. The last I heard is that they're still only distributed in WI. Spotted Cow and Belgian Red are my two favorites that are regularly available.

I'm headed to Minneapolis in two weeks and want to taste some of their local crafts. I'm familiar with Surly but sure there are many new good ones there that I should try. Any recommendations for brew, whether it's a specific beer, a brewpub, or a bar? First trip there other than being stuck at the airport.

It's not a Minn beer, but New Glarus is available there I believe. They are always really good.

it's really evolved into an open discussion of any good beer one has been drinking lately...not necessarily "favorite".

Just realized this thread is on page 49! I thought it was a new discussion!

This could get out of hand....you should limit this to favorite LOCAL beers! :)

Which...CU should have "favorite local brew" in the yearly CU votes list....

If you get a chance pick up a 4-pack of Maumee Bay Amarillo Brillo DIPA. I've seen it at the NW side Andersons and I'm sure it's other places around town. It's got that great tropical fruit hops flavor going on and also packs a good punch.

Having said that, I will be spending this weekend focussing on homebrews. A co-worker hooked me up with a growler of his all Centennial Pale Ale he did as a "session ale". At about 3.5%, I'm expecting to put that down in a hurry. Plus, my own oatmeal brown ale should be properly carbonated by now. Cheers!
