Dual Art Reviews: The Pizzuti Collection and Rooms to Let

Saturday May 18th offered central Ohio art supporters a unique opportunity to appreciate two very different ways in which the art scene in Columbus is taking off. On one end of the spectrum is the Pizzuti Collection, which opened its doors to members to present a preview of the newly renovated gallery space and opening exhibitions. At the other end of the spectrum, on the same spring afternoon and just two and a half miles east of the Pizzuti Collection, the fourth installment of Rooms to Let was held. While these two events presented obvious differences in terms of scale, scope, permanence, and resources, the love of art and the commitment to provide access to it linked them in common cause.

For the better part of the past decade, Junctionview Studios has stood at the center of the Columbus creative community. While the familiar warehouse-turned-art-studios type of venue has been done before, two important things set Junctionview apart from many others. First was its community of artists willing to open their arms beyond their own circles and networks and collaborate with anyone willing to get involved. Second was its wide variety of public events that created a level of openness and friendliness so that it was not an uncommon sight to find young professionals, CCAD students, retirees, corporate leaders, politicians, young families and everyone else intermingling at the day-long Agora art festival events.

All of that comes to a close next week as the lights go out forever in Junctionview. The artists who have studio space there are finishing their move out by the end of April, and the building is scheduled for demolition starting in May.

Join local community residents and streetcar district neighbors in celebrating the successful implementation of the Streetcar District Sculpture, a collaborative project between the Livingston Avenue Area Commission, Streetcar District Neighborhoods, and Neighborhood Design Center! The dedication will occur on Saturday, April 27th at 10:00am at the sculpture site at the NW corner of Livingston Ave. & Nelson Rd. Parking is available at the Driving Park Recreation Center and park (1100 Rhoads Avenue).

This permanent free-standing sculpture serves as the new gateway into The Streetcar District and celebrates the neighborhood history and the people who live there. The sculpture was designed by local artist, John Sunami. Landscaping around the gateway was designed by Combs Landscaping Design and installed through The Harmony Project’s, One Week, One Neighborhood Project.

The NDC in collaboration with LAVA-C and the Streetcar District Neighborhoods received a Chase 200Columbus Neighborhood Grant through the Greater Columbus Arts Council, a Joseph A. Jeffrey Grant through the Columbus Foundation, and a donation through the Norfolk Southern Foundation to make this project possible. Program support was also provided by United Way of Central Ohio.

These photos are great. Lots of fantastic art this year. I'm glad to know that many of the residents of Junctionview Studios already have new homes so they can keep making cool shit. Who was the photographer (young guy w/dreads) taking pictures during Earwig's set? I asked him and then forgot his name. (Logan/Walker maybe you know who he is)
