You are lame for picking on a non profit art organization only trying to improve our community. Get a life. Get outside, off your ass and do something, instead of Hiding behind the internet bitching about other people.

Did anybody go to or hear feedback about the 7 Tips for Creative Community event that Wonderland Columbus sponsored? Was Wonderland discussed at all?

I went. It was fantastic. Extremely informative and inspirational, so much so that I'm currently working on upgrading the business plan for the Columbus Artmobile, working on our articles of incorporation, building our board and filing for our nonprofit status, as well as formulating my first ever financial plan as an individual artist. And I was motivated to put in place a new bookkeeping system for my workplace. All based on 60 minutes of discussion.

Wonderland's Treasurer was a panel member and he was as knowledgeable and insightful as the other members. Can we still not move on from this? really?

To be clear, there is a world of difference between anonymous "reporting" and legitimate reporters using anonymous sources. One of the four main tenets of the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics is "Be Accountable." Someone writing anonymously in the guise of a reporter is accountable to no one.

You guys are discussing journalistic ethics/rules, but lets back off that for a second. I'm not even sure journalism is what we're talking about here. It's far more like editorial work. There's also a world of difference between reporters and blog-starters. There's a world of difference between being an objective source 'reporting' anonymously and using that anonymity to accuse someone of someone of sexual harassment or other illegal things. Reporting is done with sources and evidence- unfounded accusations are libel.

This is ridiculous. This thread is about one *tiny* segment of the Columbus population, and a single project. I interact with my community in many different ways, none of which are germane to this discussion.

"So, you complain that they aren't anything (zombie state), then want them to be established enough to take part in a chartity comparison thingie?"

Their current state and the state I wish they were in are two very different things. I don't really expect them to be established enough to be on Charity Navigator, as they're a brand-new non profit, but I think it's not unreasonable to ask for some kind of accounting.

"I don't see bitching re: ANYTHING OTHER THAN WONDERLAND"

Because this is a thread about (wait for it)...WONDERLAND.

"But I'm definitely more inclined to like them than not - why aren't you?"

Because I don't know them personally. I don't "like" people that I don't know. I might admire their initiative, which I do in this case, but asking questions about their project does not mean that I'm questioning their worth as human beings.

"Especially for some unnamed people on a messageboard? (No offense to Walker, heh.) And - let's face it - they could put out a detailed list of where every single dollar was sitting/spent on as of this very moment, and folks would STILL bitch."

It doesn't have to be here. How about on their own website? It's not just CU folks that are wondering. Yes, people will always bitch, but I think that being open about their fiscal progress would really take some of the wind out of the sails of TOOP, and make others more comfortable with continuing to support the Wonderland idea.

"Can you imagine if every single non-profit were subjected to such scrutiny? Why aren't they? The United Way brings in millions and millions of dollars in a more-than-slightly coercive manner through their corporate alliances. Do y'all care how much the salaries are of those employed by them? How that donated money is allocated? What charities they chose to represent, and how those charities are chosen?"
Yeah, actually I do care. I can go on Charity Navigator and check out all kinds of data on them. Where's the info like that for Wonderland?

So, you complain that they aren't anything (zombie state), then want them to be established enough to take part in a chartity comparison thingie? I'm not even sure such a website would be an appropriate metric for whatever it is they end up being - why on earth would I know the answer to that? I was just commenting that I don't see bitching re: ANYTHING OTHER THAN WONDERLAND.

It's easy to dismiss those who ask questions as "haters" - but I'd be glad to see the Wonderland concept succeed. I don't "hate" Adam, and I don't "hate" the people involved with Wonderland - I don't have *any* personal feelings toward them at all. Maybe you do.

I wasn't speaking specifically to you - although I could see how you might think so. But more, again, in context of aaaaaalllll 38 pages of this thread.

As for me, I've only met one of the Wonderland crew - Josh - and only then because he came to a couple neighborhood meetings.... 2-3 years ago. But I'm definitely more inclined to like them than not - why aren't you? I don't see where any of them has posted anything here that wasn't anything but professional. I'm aware of those folks peripherally, in town, and I like what I know about them... I know they all work hard and have accomplished some things and taken some chances that I envy.

"involved in a non-profit" check
"had to write a grant" check
"tried to get funding" check (and got it)
I simply agree with Chris. Maybe $100,000 is chump change to some organizations, I'd just like to know how it's been spent. I don't think that's an unreasonable question to ask, nor is it "bashing."

I don't know every in & out of non-profit fiscal laws, especially when it comes to something of this scale, but (unless they have specific exemptions) I believe they are required to disclose some level of granular fiscal accounting, as part of the Sunshine laws. My guess as to why they haven't would go a couple directions - since they were dealing with a third party fiscal agent for some time, it's possible that they don't have easy access to every single detail (it's not like using Quikbooks)... it's also possible that it would cost money to amass such a report for public consumption, which then everyone could further bitch about them spending money on. Another thought is that they aren't releasing anything as part of a Lessons Learned strategy. They were as open as possible in the first stage of going public, and got burned. Sure, it was a mistake to go public so quickly, so why would they take such a risk again? Especially for some unnamed people on a messageboard? (No offense to Walker, heh.) And - let's face it - they could put out a detailed list of where every single dollar was sitting/spent on as of this very moment, and folks would STILL bitch. Because everything thinks they know better how to manage it, it would seem, than the people who are doing the work.

What's that old saying? "There's one way to be wrong - and that's to tell everyone else how to handle their business."

Also - wouldn't it be ironic if TOOP's questionably legal methods of "exposing" Wonderland actually created a situation where they shut down all the former lines of communication that Wonderland had? I mean - when there is clearly someone gunning for blood, would you be willing to say anything in a public forum? You'd be crazy to say anything.
