HB 145 also would enable stopped vehicles to proceed through stoplights if detectors malfunction, preventing red signals from changing green. Rep. Michael Henne (R-Clayton), the primary sponsor, offered sponsor testimony on the legislation May 14 before the Ohio House’s Transportation, Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee. He said the law changes, developed with assistance from the Ohio Bicycle Federation, are needed to accommodate a growing number of bicycle commuters. Existing state law requires vehicles to pass bicyclists at a “safe distance,” though an actual measurement is not defined. Henne’s bill would codify a 3-foot rule, something more than 20 other states, including Pennsylvania, and three Ohio cities (Cleveland, Cincinnati and Toledo) have already adopted. “The cities of Columbus and Dayton are considering 3-foot passing clearance ordinances,” Henne said. “HB 145 would bring uniformity to the regulation of passing throughout the state of Ohio.” Additionally, the legislation would enable bicycles, cars and other vehicles stopped at stoplights to proceed through intersections, yielding to others, if detectors malfunction. Without the change, vehicles risk breaking the law and receiving citations for pulling through intersections where stoplights remain red for extended periods of time. So, in a few short weeks the temperatures will rise once again, and with that another season for the Deutsches Radfahrer Verein! We focus on easy rides on paved trails, enjoying each others company and some great Central Ohio scenery. The riders are usually all members of the Germania Club but the public is welcome to ride along, and we're always looking for new members.... If you are a Germania member: after the rides we enjoy brats and bier and usually some great kuchen as well. We will start the rides on the 11th of May and continue through October. Broad Street Columbus, OH Registration Closing Date Wednesday, July 10, 2013 @ 11:59 PM PST A bigger and better Bicentennial Twilight Ride! Please join Mayor Michael B. Coleman for Columbus’ finest, fully supported evening ride. The event promotes a great example of the benefits of active living. Start Location and Distances Friday, July 12, begins at 7:00 PM, begins and ends at COSI. The event offers rides of 10 miles (must be 8 years of age or older) and 20 miles (must be 12 years of age or older). Bike Course The unique route takes riders through the vibrant downtown area, including Columbus Commons, Scioto Mile, the new Rich Street Bridge, and other city gems. It also includes views of parks, city landmarks, and a wide variety of architecture in neighborhoods such as Franklin Park, King-Lincoln, Victorian Village, and Franklinton.
