It's a shame they didn't set the goal lower with the plan of going over. If they had set it at $20k, they would have received the $22k pledged in support.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20. Good to hear they're still moving forward with the project either way.

No, it doesn't matter how little you pay as long as someone is willing to work for that wage. (And yes, that is an argument for abolishing the minimum wage law as well.)

Also, the notion that unions are somehow the guarantors of middle-class existence (rather than one of the major influences behind pushing companies overseas and into automating work) is seriously questionable in today's world (and I'm not convinced of the truth of that thesis even 60 years ago, but that's moot at this point).

No, the right wing hasn't been happy with work conditions since the 1890s. Serfhood is the route to prosperity for all.
1. Take everything away from all but a few.
2. Work more for less.
These are a few pictures from my Architecture Thesis Project at Miami. My thesis was considering the effects of mass transit architecture on a local neighborhood. When I the Stimulus Package. At the time, the plan was to place the Columbus Train Station between the Convention Center and the Hyatt Regency. My argument was to place it in a location that would stand to benefit more from it's existence. Also, I was fearful that the Convention Center location would not be large enough to accommodate future growth and would hide mass transit rather than celebrate it.

While I am proud and excited for my project, personally, I feel this is only the beginning, and some day, I hope to return to this project and make it more magical. I'll be the first to admit that I spread myself far too thin on such a large complex project. What I am showing is what I think could happen should all parts of the Ohio Hub be realized. I also created my own idea of what I think commuter rail in Columbus could look like using existing infrastructure. I tried my best to keep from intruding into or destroying existing areas. Unfortunately that wasn't always possible (Sorry Phillip's Coney Island). Please keep in mind that this is a theoretical design and is not an official plan for anything in the future.

This is the view from the Spaghetti Warehouse. It is not a complete picture as I was unable to get far enough along in my design process. But, the idea was to create a sort of highline park where the existing track is currently located. The existing grade is denoted in the green area shown. The tracks were raised so as to keep N/S trains from crossing E/W trains, creating a bottle neck.

A view of the iconic Columbus Skyline greets visitors to our city. It was important to me to create a sort of welcoming gateway to the city, something that would entice visitors to go and explore the city.

An interior perspective showing the waiting area below and the raised platform and office tower in the back.

So it doesn't matter how little you pay as long as it drives down unemployment? Sounds like the biggest drag on our competitiveness is our middle class. Luckily, at the rate we are going, that impediment won't be around much longer.

Since the "compromise" forces insurance companies to offer the add-on option of contraceptive coverage "at no additional charge" (LOL ...), who does that mean will be paying for it in practice? The same institutions that objected to being forced to pay for it on the basis of conscience in the first place. The insurance company will bake the cost of the coverage into the premium charged to the employers.

Certainly. At the same time, it seems a decent enough compromise... I don't think it's politically feasible to drop coverage completely.

ETA: OK, so insurance companies are worried about it...

Which is exactly the stated position of those religious institutions.

You should be happy with this compromise then, yes? After all, there's still insurance coverage so no religious groups imposing their morality on you.

That the government isn't imposing others morality on them is a benefit also, yes?

Or do they have to lose so you can win?

But you're missing the point where the birth control coverage is an adder - and up to the insurance company to provide. If the tiny percentage of people (massively white, male and old) want to complain about women taking birth control (which is what this is about... ultimately... because they can let go of constitutional virtue in other places quickly enough), then they are totally free to do so - as long as it doesn't actually impinge upon the rights of the woman to equally access it.

What I object to, most strongly, is having the morality of others imposed upon me, beyond the legal framework we all operate within.

Why should someone gain benefit if they aren't members?

Because the entity employing that employee sees value in giving such benefits? They want to retain talent?

I don't believe government unions should exist, especially at the state and federal level. There are already mechanisms in place to protect employees. The unions that I deal with just like to bully around the gov't, demanding benefits far beyond what the non-represented employees receive and automatic non-merit pay increases above inflation. It's already difficult enough to find qualified individuals to fill the represented positions; the union just adds another layer of crap to deal with. Without the union not much would change except maybe going to merit pay, since attracting the talent needed is a concern.

Or maybe there is a direct correlation between globalization and wage decline? And maybe the success of unions in maintaining higher wages comes at the cost of higher unemployment?

So it doesn't matter how little you pay as long as it drives down unemployment? Sounds like the biggest drag on our competitiveness is our middle class. Luckily, at the rate we are going, that impediment won't be around much longer.

So you object to birth control? Or what? I don't quite get what the issue is. The whole point of insurance is pooled costs. That's how that shit works, yo.

*sigh*

For religious based institutions, they objected to their employer contribution being used for things ( birth control, morning after pill / abortion ( same thing to them )) that violate their principals.

If there is no employer contribution actual insurance costs would be much higher. You'd be paying all of the premium yourself; in that case your cost sharing comment has more merit.

I realize you likely neither know nor care what people of conscience think, or even if they live or die. To a large extent, neither do I... but I object to government dictating to private groups what morality should be even when I disagree with a particular private group's stance.

We are lucky to have someone which such resources and dedication to the university and city but I'm not a fan of the "rebranding" thing. Columbus is trying to get its name more recognized in this world and renaming things Nationwide Children's Hospital instead of Columbus Children's Hospital, as well as adding Wexner to the OSU med center will only take away from the opportunity for outsiders to more easily associate such insitutions with this city. Seriously, how many places need to be named Wexner or Nationwide. Erect the man a statue or something but leave the branding alone.
