According to a survey recently conducted by Americans for the Arts, more than six million people annually attend arts events in Central Ohio. Arts and culture organizations generate more than $300 million for the local economy, of which more than $180 million comes from audiences.

The organizations also account for about $220 million in household income. On average, Columbus generates more economic activity around the arts than cities of comparable size.

What follows are five examples of people who are working hard to keep the local arts landscape changing for the better. Some are also working to spread the word about Columbus arts and culture outside of I-270.

THE FIVE ARTISTS TO WATCH:

Abdi Roble

Adam Hundt

Laura Kuenzli

Wynter Whiteside

Franklinton Arts District, Arts Advocates

  • Abdi’s work is literally the stuff that will be talked about in 300 years.

  • p.s. Super big ups to Laura on Rivet, and yeah…I’ll see you this weekend to buy something dammit LOL!

  • congrats laura, it was a great article and showcase of the store/gallery and hopefully it will bring in a more/new audience that is not into the norm mass produced toy’s out there.

  • NO WAY!!!!!!

    HUGE OVERSIGHT

I think there are people who are really dedicated to the art IN COLUMBUS way more then a lot of these people listed.

I think it is known that Mike Reed at Junctionview has made a HUGE impact on the art community that will change the culture of Columbus for a long time and he is still at it.

In fact he has now changed the direction in his schooling to City Planning and I know he “believe(s) in the power of art to change the world” so in my opinion…

there was a huge oversight with this article and we will all see something amazing come from this man that most of us know and love.

So, sure these people in this article are doing great things but, keep an eye on Mike Reed because I can tell you from experience that he has something great in store for all of us and I can see no selfish motives behind any of it.

Mike Reed…. the artist in Columbus to keep and eye on.

  • Thanks coremodels and youmad for your kind words. :)

That comment should have came from me, but someone else was still logged in on the comp.

    Thank you.

I agree. But Mr. Reed was just in the alive about a month ago and I’m willing to bet that Agora will get some decent press coverage next month as well. I’m sure it was probably an editorial decision to focus on some other artists in Columbus. I think there’s enough room to spread the love around.

Besides, it’s not like this article was “the best artists in Columbus”. Just five folks you may or may not have heard of yet.

Personally, I hope this is a regular feature in the Alive. I’d love to see them highlighting all sorts of local contributors to the art scene.

  • you are right walker

I am glad to have those artists in columbus

I know a few of them on a personal level

but, the way the article was directed I was really expecting to see his name considering his impact and goals for the city of columbus

I am sorry, I have been at the other end of some very personal conversations with the man and he has this pure direction for all of his energy and skills I haven’t seen from many other people anywhere. I guess I just want to see my friend Mike get what he really deserves…

Oh well, he will, while just like anything else most people will fade off while I am positive that Signor Reed is around to stay and we will all be the better for it.

You are right though Walker, I hope to see more of that as well, and I really am happy for those who made “artists to watch” that is awesome. I really hope all of the artists in the city can really raise the bar and put on better and better things to really create a unique contribution to the culture of this city. Hopefully one day we’ll have made enough noise to create an actual support base for artists in this city so that so many of us won’t have to move away. Any steps toward that direction I support!

Sorry, I often come across one sided even though that really isn’t the case.

    :)

Ha! No problem. I know you’re a passionate guy when it comes to the local art scene, and I can’t fault you one bit for that. ;)

  • Hey Devoe…. I think Walker makes some sense on this one. There are alot of people doing stuff around here. I know Mike well.. and he is enthusiastic and actively involved in alot of things that have been benefitting the art community..

….moreover, he also is a pretty unselfish guy.

I think he would appreciate not being in the spotlight all the time.. and that the wealth of publicity gets spread around to other deserving folks….

If I know Mike well enough… he is happy with his status in the community..

I think that he knows that all of us see him as an integral part of what is going on.

Also… congratulations Rivet… for having a sweet shop that is getting noticed.

  • Thanks for the kind words, Devoe. These folks deserve their share of the spotlight… as do many others who have gone yet unmentioned.

I think Ben wants to kiss you with tongue.

    …just sayin.

  • Again?

  • Rivet, really cute show! That stuff is hilarious, really covetable. Wish I had more scratch, I’d buy like 5 of those things in a hurry. It was amazing whe I figured out what some of them were painted on, too.

Winter’s show was adorable as usual. Haven’t seen her in a while, either, so that was nice.

    +1 Mike Rocks!!

I am very excited for Agora, too… that reminds me I need to apply for that before it’s too late (it might be…).

  • :D

Agora submissions are the entire month of September @ agoracolumbus.com

Thanks for stopping in to see the show!

Thanks Adam and Mike for the kind words.

  • Yea for Laura and Rivet Gallery!! That was such a nice article. We got a couple of paragraphs in the Alive, and you got a whole page!! You will get so much more exposure now. Anyone who hasn’t been to Rivet yet will certainly be in to check it out. And they will buy some cool toys and art.

  • I know I am late on this one but I already said I thought Walker was in the right. I also believe a lot of people deserve more limelight. I think the more coverage of the arts we have around here the more likely we are of catching up with the rest of the world.

  • totally agree on the coverage thing, and think we have a vibrant enough art scene to completely support a solid local arts magazine…I just don’t want to do one :)

  • Those are only the thoughts of Melissa Starker. Not everyone else.
