From The Dispatch:

New area commission works to preserve neighborhood’s varied character

Sidewalk cafes, edgy boutiques and independent shops mix with chain stores and fast-food restaurants in the Fifth by Northwest neighborhood. The side streets are lined with older homes and duplexes mixed with new condominiums such as the Metropolitan and Broadview Mews on 3rd Avenue. The variety of shops and restaurants within walking distance is drawing more residents and developers to the area.

  • I read this story yesterday and the following caught my attention:

“This little nook we are in allows us to be a part of this great community but not pay for it,” Mrs. Linden said. The couple have three children, ages 9 months to 5 years.

Perhaps she was misquoted, but I see that same attitude far too often for my own psychic comfort. Maybe it was the vitriol of the comments about paying more taxes so that more people can be covered by health insurance or something, but I just wanted to hit Mrs. Linden. Several deep breaths later, I was no longer feeling violent towards this complete stranger, but I was quite glad I didn’t have to live near her.

  • That is a bit irritating to read, and I am also hoping that she was misquoted. I’m someone who goes to Grandview from time to time and spends money at businesses there, which supports the community, but I don’t live there, so I don’t pay Grandview taxes and support them in that way. I’m technically in the same boat, and I’m sure there are many others who could say the same thing… I think it was just a poor choice of words, or a misquoting in the editing room.

  • Varied character…there’s a Rife’s market next to a Walgreens. And they have some drive-thrus, even a Chipotle. 5thxNW gets a *yawn* from me. Hopefully it improves.

  • I will say that the new Dewey’s pizza looks nice.  Good to see that they build it right up against the sidewalk instead of the typical strip mall-type of development with parking out front along that stretch.  This is a step in the right direction.

A Fifth by Northwest area commission member is starting an initiative to create a little green space in the neighborhood.

“We are one of the only area commissions in the entire city (of Columbus) that does not have a park space,” said commission member Vania Kent. “I think this is something our community really needs.”
