Farmers’ Market Facial Gives Local Food New Use

Normally when I think and write about local food, it’s all about eating it. But a good friend of mine who just started her own soap making company gave me a new perspective about local food.

“The farmers’ market food doesn’t just nourish your body, it can also nourish your skin,” says Celtic Naturals founder Angela Buckley. “The skin is our largest organ and it’s important to care for it.”

Today, you can find these items at your local farmers’ market to use for your skin: apples, cucumbers and pumpkins. To choose the best produce, follow the same guideline as when selecting food to eat: The fresher it is, the better it is for you. Go for color.

Your skin type will determine what “food” is best on your skin:

  • Apples: acne control
  • Pumpkin: Skin spot aging and general revitalizing
  • Cucumber: refreshing

When making a mask, only two or three items are needed, and one component should be high in fat – whole fat yogurt or milk. While we often avoid putting this in our bodies, our skin needs it. And no, it doesn’t cause acne.

Here is an example recipe and facial steps for normal to oily skin:

  • 1 green apple, peeled, quartered & cored, chilled
  • 1/2 t. nutmeg
  • 1/2 - 1 c. whole fat yogurt

Chop/blend the items in a blender. Start with 1/2 c. yogurt and add more as necessary. (You can make your own yogurt from organic whole milk, or just grab some from Snowville Creamery.)

Steps to the farmers’ market facial:

  1. Wash face with warm water and cleansing face soap
  2. Steam (only 2x per month) using a dampened facecloth heated in the microwave for two minutes
  3. Apply chilled mask, rest 10-15 minutes
  4. Wash the mask with warm water
  5. Apply toner
  6. Apply moisturizer
