Everything in beekeeping starts and ends with the bees. A lot of people are interested in becoming backyard beekeepers, however they lack the confidence of taking on their own hive. This winter, join the Ohio Herb Education Center for A Beekeeper’s Year. Led by Dave Noble, an apiarist with over 20 years of experience in beekeeping, students will strengthen their knowledge of bees and colony behavior in order to develop their confidence in practicing bee keeping.

This series of four in-depth classes are designed to give you the basic foundation you need to get started on your beekeeping journey.

Basic Bee Biology
We delve right into deconstructing a honey bee colony. Learn about the anatomy and behavior of bees and how a functional honey bee colony works. Understanding the biology and behavior directly affects the basic management practices of a beekeeper.

Date: Saturday, January 13, 10:00a-1:00p

Biology Based Management
The role of the beekeeper changes seasonally and year-to-year. In this class, we explore the fundamental management practices of the beekeeper, from monitoring to hive inspection, as well as how to modify your tasks based on the needs of the bee colony.
Date: Saturday, February 3, 10:00a-1:00p

City Bees
There are special considerations for keeping bees in an urban or suburban environment. In this class we will discuss how to be a good beekeeping neighbor and cover issues such as local codes, hive placement and swarm management.

Date: Saturday, February 24, 10:00a-1:00p

Basics of Working a Hive
We end this series with the bees. Using the knowledge from our previous classes we will practice a hands-on hive inspection. Learn about what tools are required and how to most effectively use them. Receive tips on how to interact with bees that can be enjoyable for both you and the bees.

Date: Sunday, April 22, 10:00a-1:00p**This is a tentative date. Seasonal temperatures may affect the time or date of this class.
