It’s no joke!
Columbus City Council will officially resolve that, out of the more than 300 days that comprise 2017, only April 1st shall heretofore be known as April Fools Day in the City of Columbus. In celebration of this auspicious occasion, the fourth annual April Fools Parade and Festival of Hilaria will take place on Saturday, April 1, 2017 in the SoHud (South of Hudson) community.
Celebrating SoHud’s quirkiness and artistic diversity, home-made costumes, puppets, various musical instruments, tall bikes and short children will wind through the neighborhood starting at 2 pm at The Dude Locker . The Artists Wrestling League and Radio614 will entertain before the parade begins and Evolved Body Art will be offering face painting. The parade will end at the Festival of Hilaria at The Summit, 2210 Summit Street. The family friendly event will feature face painting, a photo booth, games of chance and skill (including a piñata, wheel-of- fortune, giant Jenga and others). Featured performers include Mummula, Fisher, Movement Afoot and Comrade Question.
Initially spear-headed by the SoHud Blockwatch organization, the parade has grown into an annual gathering of community members and residents from across the city to celebrate the arrival of Spring. Each year the Parade and Festival creates opportunities for individuals in the community to work together to participate in an artistic, unique expression of neighborhood creativity and lightheartedness.
The history of April Fool’s Day is uncertain, but seems to be linked to the transition with the Gregorian Calendar which changed New Year’s Day, previously April 1st, to January 1st. Traditions and slow communication had many continuing to celebrate the new year on April 1st. Those who did were labeled “fools” by the general populace and subject to ridicule and pranks.
