After a 10 year hiatus, the Planetarium has officially returned to COSI. The updated exhibit has seen a million-dollar renovation and modernization that now features state-of-the-art projection technology.
“It’s so dramatically different from what you’ll remember — this is ‘Planetarium Plus’ now that we’ve gone digital,” said COSI President and CEO David Chesebrough. “There is incredible breadth and depth in this immersive environment that we’ve created here.”
In addition to the traditional astronomical projections, the Planetarium will be utilized as a secondary theater for the building, kicking off with Christmas-themed shows and a Sesame Street show that teaches smaller children about the stars and the solar system. Chesebrough added that future uses could include illustration projects from CCAD students, or using the space as a 60-foot immersive video gaming screen.
“Students off all ages could even create their own shows in their classrooms, come to COSI, give us a flash drive and then watch it on the screen,” he stated.
Chesebrough noted that the moon exhibit at COSI was one of the first installed when the center opened back in in 1964, and that being able to re-open the largest planetarium in the state of Ohio marked the last piece to finally re-complete COSI.
The Planetarium officially reopens today, November 22nd at 10:30am. It will operate from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. Admission is $5 with general admission, or $4 for members.
