Election Day open thread – Did you vote today?

By: Brent

I just drove through campus on the way to work. There were about 100 students in line outside the Jesse Owens building waiting to get inside to wait in line some more. It was 7:25 in the morning.

I was NEVER up before 10 when I was in college. Wow.

  • Took just over an hour this year. Compared to my 10:30pm vote time (after a 5 hour wait) back in ’04 this was a breeze. Free donuts and coffee was great too. about 200-300 people were in line when I arrived at 6:30am. We sat in the auditorium waiting for the polls to open. 20 voting machines this year compared to the 4 machines in ’04.

  • bobrich wrote Had about a 5 minute wait (@~9:30am) out in the boonies in Marysville. Had to vote provisionally b/c of a recent address change, but it was fairly painless. Everybody was super nice, although it’s clear that some additional training would give the poll workers a little more confidence in handling miscellaneous issues.

Hey Bob! :D Glad to see you’re no longer a lurker!

  • I voted this morning at Beck School. Got there around 7:30… buzzed in on my walk with the dog when I was assured that the wait would be about 35 minutes. It wasn’t. Took about an hour, when all was said and done. But the wait wasn’t bad, and I was glad to get the voting out of the way, so I wouldn’t have to think about it for the rest of the day.

I was happy that I had done my homework, and reviewed the choices for judges etc the other day… some of the discussion here on CU made me particularly aware that picking judges was a really important issue. Some people were taking FOREVER with the ballot. I suspect they hadn’t checked it out beforehand. SO glad that I had looked at all of the issue questions beforehand!

  • joev wrote Did anyone vote in a Catholic church today? I haven’t heard of one being a polling place yet. Interesting.

I know that my parish, Immaculate Conception on EN Broadway is a polling place. I think Bishop Ready and OLP are as well.

  • Voted around Noon… there was a machine open for me right away. :D

Just finished my last volunteer shift for Obama. Now, it’s time to drink.

    YIPPEEEEEEEEE

  • Some day, hopefully in my lifetime, the TV news people will find a collective brain cell.

Why not: “It is 6 PM. People voted. We will know more later. Until then, here’s fluffy kittens!”

    A.

  • I saw 60-38 for McCain-then heard the reassuring “this is just parts of Kentucky and Indiana”

  • Voted at 6:40AM this morning. This is an exciting election day!

  • Voted at the Greek Orthodox Church at 6pm… total wait zero minutes. I walked in, checked in, voted and was out in 10 minutes. I actually thought I was in the wrong place because it was so dead. Good thing I didn’t wake up at 5:30am like I was planning and wait in line before work!!

If they want something REALLY cute they can send a reporter over here to film guineapigs!

  • I know it’s really really early. But is anyone else getting nervous? I have this terrible feeling about Virginia.

Early returns are showing 50-49 in favor of McCain. I don’t think there is much to worry about at this point. Once more states start coming in we’ll have a better sense.

  • Dead even in OH at 46-46 with 1%

VA is around 56-43 for McCain

FL is around 56-43 for Obama

Seems like its flipping back for Obama

  • Florida is leaning VERY heavily in favor of Obama in early returns. On a side note, the Objectivist Party is doing surprisingly well there. Maybe there’s an Ayn Rand Memorial Compound there?

  • 65-35 for Obama in N Carolina

Actually you should have been allowed to vote a normal ballot, the poll worker should have asked for your last 4 ssn and writen that in the poll book instead of making you vote provisionally. THIS IS WHY ALL OF THESE CRAZY ID LAWS ARE DISENFRANCHISING VOTERS. No body seems to know what the rules are. I won’t argue having ID rules or not but I’ll argue to my death that all of the extra steps in the process are not good for democracy. Make it simple already…

I’m quoting from a few pages back, just getting caught up from being at work.

I don’t really find the ID laws that confusing. SOS ran a number of ads over the the course of the week outlining it pretty clearly. Bring a photo ID that is current (not expired), a utility bill, bank statement, government document with current address. I just changed my registration to my new apartment. My license still shows my parents address, so I took my lease and gas bill. No issues, they checked my ID and utility bill and lead me to a machine.

If you’re a poll worker, to me it’s your responsibility to get the information and make sure you understand.

  • I never know who to trust during these really early results, but CNN is showing Ohio as 65% Obama 34% McCain.

We had mostly new poll workers at my ward, but they’re much sharper than a couple of years ago. I managed to use a blank check of mine as ID in 2006 because it had my maiden name on it and I didn’t want to vote provisionally. It never would have flown this year, at least not where I voted.

Man I called that wrong in the other thread….

Of course, that’s with 0% of the precincts reporting. ;)
