Election Day open thread – Did you vote today?

By: Brent

I just drove through campus on the way to work. There were about 100 students in line outside the Jesse Owens building waiting to get inside to wait in line some more. It was 7:25 in the morning.

I was NEVER up before 10 when I was in college. Wow.

  • is anyone else gonaa wait until tomorrow to vote? The guy that called me from the election commission said the lines will be a lot shorter…

    just kidding :P

joev wrote Interesting, but I think there’s quite a bit of bias in the above article. Voters are not “forced” to vote on provisional ballots. If they don’t follow directions on identification, they have the option of casting provisional ballots or coming back with the proper documents.

Free Press having a bias? Say it isn’t so!

I have no idea who the Free Press is, but the name sounded like a newspaper.

    Apropos!

I’m not sure if that was a very clever play on words, an original new word (champagne to celebrate the end of a very long campaign) or just a typo.

But it is a clever portmanteau whether or not it was intentional – happy blogging and I hope you get to drink the champagne.

Maybe this, although it’s 70 degrees there today.

Well it is The Free Press which is hugely liberal but you’re statement isn’t quite true either. As shown by bobrich who was directed to vote provisionally (or not vote – there’s his choice) he was made to vote provisionally not because he didn’t have the right ID but because the poll worker didn’t realize that he could vote regular if he gave them his last 4 of his ssn. Obviously bobrich didn’t realize that either.

Provisional ballots are easily challenged and it is then on the voter to go and prove who they are after the election. This is burdonsome even for questionable voters but even more of a problem when the voter does in fact have the right to vote a regular ballot but due to poor training or misunderstanding they are MADE to vote provisionally.

  • 1945 The BBC’s Philippa Thomas in Columbus, Ohio, says: The official line in this state – an absolute must-win for Mr McCain – is that voting is “orderly and brisk”. But there are some reports of confusion, stemming from the fact that voters are allowed to choose between the touch-screen electronic option or the old-fashioned paper ballot. The Election Protection coalition, which is non-partisan, says some voters asking for a paper vote are being directed to cast “provisional ballots” instead. These won’t necessarily be counted, and can get disqualified in the legal squabbles that follow a close contest. To show you why this could matter – in 2004, there were more provisional ballots cast in Ohio, than the margin of George W Bush’s narrow victory.

    +1 ha!

  • If folks experienced any problems/issues in Franklin County that might be remedied by better poll worker training, my mom would love to hear about it. She helps train the poll workers and is always looking for feedback. If you could include where you voted (location of the poll), time of day, issue/problem, etc., that’d be great.

    moo!

  • Anybody else hoping to not hear the phrase “too close to call” tonight?

  • Did anyone vote in a Catholic church today? I haven’t heard of one being a polling place yet. Interesting.

hey look at that. we had a blast and the rally was amazing. i vote at the boys and girls club on gift st in franklinton. there has never been a line the 4 years or so ive voted there and of course no line this morning. what was funny is that there were 4 attorneys there making sure that everyone was treated fairly. i think they could have done fine with just 1 lawyer but maybe both parties need to be represented.

well they used to vote at bishop watterson high school. i remember only because i was a student there. but that was 15 years ago and maybe they dont anymore.

  • I voted in Hilliard and was in line before work this morning at 6am. About 15 people were there, but by 6:30 there was probably 100-150. Glad I got there when I did, and was out of there by 7.

Free Stuff Note: Chick-Fil-A stores in Hilliard and Polaris are giving out free chicken sandwiches today until 8pm.
