Editorial: A Reintroduction to Columbus Underground

As Columbus Underground celebrates its fifteenth year in 2016, we thought it would be a good time to reintroduce ourselves to the community. Not only has Columbus changed drastically over the past decade and a half, but so has Columbus Underground, as well as its mission and purpose. Without diving too deep into the history, Columbus Underground has gradually evolved from event-centric hub, to a community discussion forum, and into an online original news publication. While the changes have allowed us to remain at the forefront of relevance in the community, it’s also blurred the definition of who we are, what we do, and what we stand for.

Last fall, we hired the experts at Geben Communication to help survey our readers and several community leaders to find out their perceptions about Columbus Underground. What we heard back confirmed our initial understanding that Columbus Underground means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. Some people think it’s just an email newsletter. Some people think it’s just a discussion board. Some people think it only focuses on urban development and restaurant reviews. Some people think the only focus is the Mega Weekend event list.

While each of those individual components make up the greater whole of what we do, the research has provided us with a renewed interest in explaining who we are and how we impact our community. To put it simply, Columbus Underground is an independently owned online news publication, covering a wide range of topics: from arts and entertainment, to civics and politics, and everything else in between that makes our city shine. Our mission is to connect the residents and visitors of Columbus with the most relevant, interesting, and newsworthy information about our city and region.

Throughout 2016, we’ll be continuing this discussion by penning regular editorial pieces that focus on specific topics to provide additional details and context about our mission. Some of those pieces will include more insight about our role in local journalism, information about our staff and offices, our firm stance on separating advertising from editorial, more details about our philanthropic efforts, a discussion about the love we have for this community, and many other topics.

But for now, we’d just like to say Welcome! to all of our newest readers, and Welcome back! to all of our readers who have been around awhile. We’re excited about some new projects that we have in the works, and are looking forward to telling our story in a new way in the weeks, months, and years to come.
