The Short North went from one place (old Union Station) with decent, reliable bar food to two places (Union Cafe and East Village) with overpriced crap.
At Union: service still sucks. I got a steak salad. There was maybe 3 ounces of mixed greens (and that’s a generous guess) with a few slices of steak. It cost $13. It wasn’t worth half of that.
Wild mushroom pizza: not quite done all the way. Sauce/crust had funny taste, really weird after taste. Also overpriced.
Another friend who is a kitchen manager in Cleveland for Union ordered a chicken parmigana sandwich. Not once, not twice, but three times the sandwich came out and was cold. How difficult is it to make a chicken parmigana sandwich which does not have icicles in the middle? Apparently very difficult.
At East Village: service is eh, ok. Got a Philly Steak and Cheese Wrap. It cost $7.49, was maybe an inch, an inch and a half around, no cheese, no mushrooms, about a total of 6 pieces of onion and pepper, and incredibly dry. It did not come with any sides – had to order tater tots for an additional $1.99. So for about $9.50 I got good tater tots (hard to fuck up) and an inedible wrap with no filling.
Burger: dry, dry, dry. Old Union had great burgers. Not so much anymore. Also doesn’t come with sides, so had to order fries (for $1.99) in addition to the $8 burger (I think it was $8 ).
We were honest with our server when she asked how everything was. The manager came over, and quite honestly, had the personality of a rug. When we said the burger was dry, he said, “ordered well done, right?” Hm. Well done does not mean dry. We made a burger at home that evening which was well done and very juicy.
While at East Village, another table that ordered pizzas was showing the server how the middle of both of the pizzas were doughy – as in not even remotely cooked.
On both occasions we were not charged the full amount of our bill because of the sub-par food. However, even if they improve the food quality, the prices are way too high (especially for East Village). A la carte dining is fine for a place like The Ocean Club but not for a bar food joint such as East Village. Or, if they must do a la carte, they need to lower the prices on the sandwiches.
On the positive note: both places are beautiful. The remodeling is well done and looks great.

What the hell is ‘east’ about this place? East side of High St. East of Valleyview. I doubt they face the east when praying, or even pray at all.
What’s the deal-yo?!?!?!?!
makes it sound NYC-ish, which as everyone knows, anything NYC is COOL, Right?!!!!!
NYC is not cool. What is cool is responsible fathers and husbands, civility, frugality, and respect for the elderly.
^^^ THANKS MCGRUFF!!!

“east village” is supposed to invoke nyc. in columbus.

Completely agree with you here. Went to East Village. Waited 30 minutes for a server to come to our party. People sitting next to us looked similarly dissatisfied. Even went to a hostess to tell them we hadn’t yet been waited on and — still no one came. So we walked out and went to Surly Girl instead. Much better food, prices and service.
I definitely agree about the prices too. Most of the entrees don’t come with side dishes and everything is very overpriced for what you get. Very disappointed with East Village and the new Union’s food. Atmosphere and decor is very nice, however.
