This weekend, Studio 35 is hosting a three-day event revolving around one of the Coen Brothers’ finest films: The Big Lebowski. It’s sure to be a celebration of beer, bowling, and a constant stream of movie references and memorable quote from the film.
I sat down with Rita Volpi and Eric Brembeck, co-owners of Studio 35 to get some more details about the event.
Walker: Studio 35 is a great place to watch cult films and fun socially-interactive films. But for those few people who have never seen it… why did you choose the Big Lebowski?
Rita: Well, we had only watched The Big Lebowski in bits and pieces before last year when one of our friends said you HAVE to watch it!
Eric: Yeah, so we decided to show it at the theater and the turnout was awesome so we wanted to make it an event again this year. I’ve seen it twice now.
Walker: I’m a big fan myself and used to own it on DVD, but someone borrowed it and I lost track of it. I’ve probably watched it a dozen times, but the last full viewing was probably five years ago for me. Do you guys have any crazy mega-fans that show up?
Rita: Some of the fans last year dressed up in costume as characters from the film, quoting the dialogue and everything. We knew we had to bring it back this year. It may even become an annual event.
Walker: Wow. Sounds like a blast! I’m not much of a beer drinker myself, but a lot of friends and Columbus Underground readers have praised the beer selection at Studio 35. Can you tell us a bit more about the beers being featured this weekend as well as any other favorites in the current rotation?
Eric: Bell’s Oberon is my favorite of the Bells beers that we will be serving, but it is more of a summer beer. Double Cream Stout is pretty good, especially for the winter. My current favorite is Lagunitas PILS.
Rita: Hands down, my favorite is Barley’s Four Seas Imperial IPA. Whoa mama – it will knock your socks off!
Walker: I heard that there will be a Nintendo Wii Bowling Tournament this weekend as well, right? Is that going to be hooked up to the big screen?
Eric: Yeah, the Wii bowling will done on the big screen as well as on two smaller Plasma TVs. We’ll have it set up for everyone to play throughout the day.
Walker: Awesome. I’ve only seen YouTube videos of people playing Wii on theater screens, so I’d love to stop by and try that out myself. Final question… just for fun… what’s your favorite Big Lebowski quote?
Eric: “I’m the Dude. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.”
Rita: Ha! My favorite Lebowski quote cannot be printed without censorship!
Walker: Oh yeah… the language isn’t for the faint of heart. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to fill us in on this event. Looking forward to all of the other special events you guys have up your sleeves for the rest of 2009.
