Dispatch Dining Guide: Top 20 of 2008

The Dispatch wrote Columbus dining: The Top 20 restaurants

The “Top 10″ restaurants represent the best in Columbus. The second 10 — called “the Next Tier” — also are deserving of mention. Both lists are presented alphabetically. Like any other restaurant rating, this list is subjective. The primary criterion is quality of the food. Value, the surroundings and the level of service also are taken into consideration — as are other factors, such as the willingness to take reservations, noise level, menu variety and attention to details (quality of the bread, olive oil and butter, for example).

  • Of all these that I have not tried, I want to try Kihachi the most. Glad to see Scali and The Top on there.

    Tucci’s? Really?

I guess I don’t really read reviews anymore, other that what I read online. I would rather ask the advice of someone I know whose taste I trust. From what I have heard, but not yet experienced, Sage should be included somewhere.

Then again, what do I know. I’m currently eating Cocoa Pebbles dry from the box and drinking an MGD for dinner. :)

Earlier this week, I had a sleeve of Ritz Crackers and bud light over ice for dinner.

  • No love for Alana’s? Really?

  • Based on experience and Roland’s dining habits, an informal top 10 of CU posters would include:

    Alana’s

    Basi

    Bono

    Betty’s

    Bodega

    Starliner

  • Notice that the higher ranked ones have the least ample parking.

I’ve heard rumors that Alana’s and the Dispatch are on the outs. I don’t know why.

But this article makes the Dispatch look pretty absurd, in my opinion. I mean, you can argue about where exactly Alana’s belongs among Columbus restaurants, but not putting it in a top 20 list just makes it seem like the reviewer doesn’t know his own city (or isn’t competent to judge its restaurants).

    Agreed.

    Heard the same thing.

Heard this more than once as well. I’d trust a top 20 from Lisa over one from Christensen any day.

This has always been one of my biggest pet peeves about this list. Clearly, Alana’s belongs in the top 20. Especially considering their wine list is at state minimum + corkage fee, JC has no business not going there since he is such a whiner on the subject of wine prices.

He also seems to drop restaurants for weird personal reasons – G. Mike’s was on the list for years and then all of a sudden dropped off. M was left off as well. I with he would state his reasons for dropping restaurants.

I will give him a little credit this time, for not mentioning wine prices in EVERY snippet, like he did the last time. It gets tiresome.

  • Speaking of corking fees, are there any BYOB restaurants in town?

  • Brant Jones wrote Speaking of corking fees, are there any BYOB restaurants in town?

No. It is illegal if you have any type of license or are applying for one.

If you know of one, see above.

    A.

  • This seems to be a pretty solid list (never been to Alana’s) but it doesn’t seem to change much from year to year….nice to see Barcelona crack the top 10.

  • Brant Jones wrote Speaking of corking fees, are there any BYOB restaurants in town?

Shoku is BYOB on Sundays. There might be more, but serving alcohol on the premises is kind of a must for my patronage.

  • what/where is DeepWood? Anyone been?

  • vestanpance wrote what/where is DeepWood? Anyone been?

DeepWood is down in the Short North on the corner of High & Swan.

I’ve been once – we ate in the “dining room” side. I thought the food was very good – the Scallop Wellington appetizer was especially awesome. I had the duck for an entree, and thought it was good as well, but maybe not as mind-blowing as the scallops.

I’d definitely go back. It’s hard to really rank it based on one visit, but I could see a good case made for it being on this list.

  • thanks, I must have been sleeping through all those threads.

    Agreed as well !

Lets be honest here how many times do we hear how silly they sound in this forum ? A few good ones I mean The list is blah it is what you would expect from them. Bland and so so on most reviews. There odd balls at the dispatch . I will never understand it I think they should turn some stuff over to the people . ok I’m done blubbering now .

Where do you hear these rumors? There are specific rules for using anonymous sources, and you’re not following any of them.

Also, why is this list absurd? Because it doesn’t follow your taste? I don’t think Alana’s should be in the top 20. I mean, who wants to eat a different type of risotto every day?
