Dirty Frank’s Hot Dogs opening downtown in July

By: Walker

Dirty Frank’s Hot Dogs, a casual hot doggery and neighborhood bar is set to open mid-July in Downtown Columbus, Ohio bringing another fun and affordable lunch option to downtown workers and dwellers. Partners Elizabeth Lessner and Harold LaRue look to bring quality hot dogs and some whimsical sizzle to downtown Columbus.

“Columbus has hot dog envy. People visit New York and Chicago and eat at some of the finest restaurants in the world but come back raving about the hot dogs,” says Lessner, current CEO of Betty’s, Surly Girl Saloon and Tip Top Kitchen and native of Chicago, famed for their outstanding “slap your forehead” scrumptious red hots.

Dirty Franks will feature delicious all-beef Vienna franks, Polish sausages, Kielbasa and Tofu dogs served in steamed poppy seed buns topped with fresh ingredients prepared to order. Sides will include Corn on the Cob with Chipotle Butter, Sriracha Cole Slaw, Roasted Sport Pepper Mac ‘n Cheese, India Pale Ale Dredged Onion Rings, and Hot Dog Cornbread. Salads and a few casserole dishes will also be available.

To complement your dog, locally brewed Frostop Root Beer on draught, plenty of Pabst Blue Ribbon and the house specialty drink, Dirty Frank’s Bloody Mary which contains Sport-Pepper Infused Vodka with Celery Seed Bloody Mary mix.

  • In Chicago, ketchup is sacrilege. But since we aren’t in Chicago, we’ll have a coupla bottles on hand.

And I salute the following for giving me inspiration:

Wholly Joes (Chicago hot dog shop that opened several years ago at Polaris)

Carabar (their Chicago Red Hot Weiner Wednesdays are the BEST in town, they have been doing this at least two years now)

Phillip’s Coney Island HOT DOGS! God bless the Manus family for serving hot dogs OVER 90 YEARS in Columbus!

Best of the Wurst at North Market that has proudly sold Vienna Franks for about twenty years.

and of course, the great Dog Joint in Westerville that opened last year.

I love hot dogs and Columbus. And I will do my best to bring a unique and AFFORDABLE dining option to downtown, average tickets expected to be $6 (and that includes an icy cold Frostop or PBR).

  • Great news! I’ve almost driven back to Chicago on the weekend for a good (non-Coney!) dog. As well, I’ve almost put down my life savings into franchising Hot Doug’s (the best in Chicago). Buthe one thing missing in most of this conversation though is that you cannot overlook the fries. There may not be a single standard that has to be met but they’ve gotta deliver. I’m looking forward to this and I’m comin’ hungry!

  • honavery wrote How did this topic become so controversial/negative? It’s hot dogs!

    +1

As controversial of a topic that the Streetcar is, I don’t think it will ever surpass how riled up people get about food on CU. ;)

honavery wrote I think Liz has proven she knows what she’s doing, so I’ll wait and see what the place is like, and even where it is exactly before I cry foul.

    +2

Everyone should try places out before you make up your mind. Period.

As Liz said, we’ll have a CU event there as soon as possible so that everyone gets to make up their mind first hand. Details to come! :D

  • This thread is incomprehensibly bizarre. I could not in my wildest dreams imagine anyone actually tarring a hot dog joint for being derivative or slagging on it because it’s a proven money maker.

Edit: unless that person might happen to be a certain restauranteur who has been known to frequent this board and vent his bitterness by slandering his more successful competitors…

  • Village Coney is the one off of Whitter, just a little ways west of Parsons. Great place. I love Phillips and hope its still there. Grew up riding with my dad on sales calls in the summer and stopping every now and then at Phillips for a couple Coney’s. Maybe I need to stop by there soon. Hot dogs are my guilty pleasure.

Especially, as pointed out earlier, such great places as Phillip’s have existed for well over 90 years here in town.

    1. liz walks on water. seen it, but it WAS dark, so. . .??

    2. A big congrats to The Dog Joint for bringing hot dogs to columbus!

    3. CU preview party – hel.., hell…, are you ther… was i going through a tunn…?

    4. can the world have too much liz? As with everything related to her ventures, i sound like such an ass kiss, but i don’t care. you hear me lessner? don’t care!

  • If there was a chance that you could sneak in a special Seattle dog (ahem… spicy polish dog slathered with cream cheese, grilled onions, and spicy mustard) for even just a month, I would jump and do heel clicking and stuff… also, I’d probably drain my bank acct there.

  • Good sauerkraut will keep me happy…

    :D

  • I’ll admit I’m very excited about this.

Hopefully it’s close to me so I actually be able to sneak over there. :D

  • +1 Best of the Wurst.

Baby, those better be kosher beef dogs or I am not biting!!

Because kosher beef dogs are the lip-smackingly best. .

  • Ashland wrote I am more concerned about having a hotdog that is cheap because they dont have to cover overhead for modern and eclectic decor. Are hot dogs going to be affordable? Think at most maybe 3.75?

Well, how about $.99 cents for a dog at A&W? And they’re good too.

    Paul

  • Munched a couple Hebrew Nation last night in anticipation of this momentous Columbus event :D

  • What I don’t get is anyone being excited about PBR of all things. That’s the suckiest of all sucky beers. It’s big with the hipsters in Brooklyn too, which I never got.

And who could object to mustard on a hot dog? Is that a west coast thing? Because that is my preferred topping.

  • I just heard a rumor about a hot dog joint opening in Grandview. Apparently hot dogs are the new tapas!

Really, you are a fan? Funny you mention them as I just ate one two days ago out on W. Broad. I had not had one in years, but I was not a fan. I will take a Dairy Queen dog, or a Hardee’s dog any day over A&W. The A&W double bacon cheeseburgers are another story though. They may be the best fast food burgers.

May be one of the best one-liners I’ve read on the CU in a while.

    It’s cheap.

    It’s cold.

    It will get you drunk.

And it tastes delicious with weenies.

That’s enough reason for me to drink it.
