Mardi Gras is the perfect day for indulgence — good drinks, great music, and of course, excessively decadent foods! To celebrate the occasion, Columbus Underground is gathering all of the city’s top dessert makers together for one night of deliciousness at our second annual Best Bites: Sweet Treats event on Tuesday, February 9th at The Athenaeum.
This Mardi Gras themed event will feature 28 businesses providing samples of everything from pies to ice creams to donuts to marshmallows to donuts and everything in between. Attendees will also cast their votes to name one dessert the Best Bite in Columbus!
Here’s a quick preview of several of the treats that will be featured at the event:
Bacon Brownie & Bourbon Ball
From 1803 Bacon
New bacon business 1803 Bacon will be making their Best Bites debut with an amazing salty and sweet item: A dark chocolate bacon caramel brownie topped with their signature bacon bourbon ball and a side of maple espresso bacon. The decadence within is certainly appropriate for Mardi Gras.
A Quartet of Cupcake Flavors
From Red Velvet Cafe
Newcomer Red Velvet Cafe has been open Downtown for nearly a full year, and has perfected the art of the cupcake in a very short amount of time. At Best Bites they’ll be showcasing several of their signature flavors in miniature form, including Taro, Creme Brulee, Salted Caramel and — of course — Red Velvet.
Tiramisu and more
From Cakes and More
Appropriately, Cakes and More will be providing more than one dessert at Best Bites, but the main item they’ll showcase is their Tiramisu. The Italian dessert is made from espresso and liquor soaked layers of vanilla sponge cake that are filled with Mascarpone cheese mousse and topped with cocoa powder.
Mini Cupcake Flight
From Sunday’s Cakery
The folks at Sunday’s Cakery are getting into the Mardi Gras spirit with a trio of drink-themed cupcakes! Those include an Amaretto Sour (cherry almond cake w with Disaronno-spiked icing, topped with a sweet & sour sprinkle), a Salted Caramel Latte (rich coffee chocolate cake with a caramel latte icing, drizzled with caramel and sprinkled with sea salt) and a Berry Honey Lemonade (lemon scented cake with a fresh berry center, iced with honey buttercream).
Advance tickets to the event are $30, which includes unlimited sweet treat samples and a cash bar featuring Crafthouse Cocktails as well as beer and wine options. Tickets are expected to sell out. A portion of the proceeds from all ticket sales will be donated to the The Columbus Foundation’s Gifts of Kindness Fund.
Participating treat makers include Three Kids and a Kitchen, MMELO, J-Pops Gourmet Ice Pops, Graeter’s Ice Cream, Lyric Donuts, Katy’s Kandies, 1803 Bacon, Red Velvet Cafe, The Table, Mika’s Cupcakes & Creams, Pattycake Bakery, Rime Time Pops, Copious, Velvet Ice Cream, Kroger Bakery, Sugardaddy’s Sumptuous Sweeties, Cherbourg Bakery, Eban’s Bakehouse, Schmidt’s, Gallerie Bar & Bistro, Four and Twenty Blackbird Bakeshop, Cakes and More, The Angry Baker, Eagle Family Candy, Laughlin’s Bakery, Cameron Mitchell Restaurants, Capital City Cakes and Sunday’s Cakery.
