After securing a demolition permit from the city on Tuesday, the Columbus Metropolitan Housing Authority is proceeding with their plan to tear down Poindexter Village. The permit allows for the demolition of 25 of the 35 buildings, with consultants currently studying the feasibility of saving the remaining ten buildings.
Neighborhood groups have protested the demolition, saying that the historic nature of the buildings and their importance to the African-American community has not been taken into consideration by the housing authority.
Current plans call for the construction of a 104-unit senior housing project at 245 N. Champion Avenue, although there will be plenty of additional land available for redevelopment after the 25 structures are taken down. The neighborhood plan unveiled this spring as a part of the PACT initivative calls for additional multi-family housing and a two-acre park.
