The Short North is getting another coffee shop. Cuppy’s Coffee of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., is setting up shop at 849 N. High St. The 800-square-foot store is expected to open in December. The local franchisee is Maj Firouzian. The company was founded last year and already has 40 stores in 18 states. Cuppy’s serves CaffÈ D’arte coffee of Seattle, whose beans are roasted according to the region where they’re grown. There will be limited food service.

Caffe D’Arte in Seattle has the nice schtick of having four different types of espresso based on the region of Italy. Interesting and cool, but none of them really contend for the best in Seattle. Don’t remember anything about roasts based on the region. They do wood roast their coffee, but I only remember two variations.

A little looking at Cuppy’s hideous website (their graphics will prevent me from going there, I think) shows nothing about terroir and coffee or even the differing Italian roasts. As if Gary not having a clue is news …

Sweet Goddess, Cuppy’s looks like hell.

    A.

  • That is a pretty bad logo.

  • oh, I kinda liked the logo. Oh well, I will be there!

  • SHIT. I just saw the website. I’m out. Ick. Peace Cuppy’s Coffee.

  • Yeah, their website is a bit rough… but does that really affect what the coffee tastes like?

I mean… Cup O Joe is ok coffee, right? And they don’t even have a website!

  • If we’re asked to respond, and the only thing we have are the awful graphics, what more can we go by, other than, wait and see.

I know i’m preaching to the choir here, but design says so much, whether you want it to or not.

10 minutes gives us 3 more options for a cuppy’s logo. a few days could actually nail it. . .

which one fits best, if any?

I dunno… since they’re a chain with quite a few locations all over the US I thought perhaps someone here has had them before in another city and could chime in. ;)

I like the bottom one best. But honestly, I can’t say I’m a fan of the name “Cuppy’s” to begin with. It sounds too FisherPrice to me. Which doesn’t really fit with a grown-up activity like drinking coffee.

    What about Drinky-Poo’s Saloon?

Oh wait, that’s actually a pretty good name for a bar.

  • You guys are all fools. That’s the funniest logo I’ve ever seen! Thus, the best. If you want to see a really bad logo for a coffee shop, click here. If you dare!!!

    MUAH HA HA HAAA!

  • Hmm, what to call our new coffee shop franchise: Luppys? No, that’s not it. Muppies? Ruppies? Tuppies? McGruppies? Wait… what about… CUPPIES? That’s it! Brilliant idea. (Actually I kind of likes it– and the stupid logo is kinda kitschy if you stare).

  • Since it’s such a childish name they should have a very grown up slogan like

    Cuppies

    Drink coffee bitch!

  • Where is this going exactly? In one of the Dakota’s retail spots?

  • yeah really where is this going!!!

Also i’ll have to comment on skreened logos, those arent good either……

obviously they are doing something right the coffee shop is difficult to maintain, and keep loyal customer’s, there are just so damn many of them.

  • it’s going into one of the corner retail spots in the dakota. yeah, their website is an eyesore, but my buddy in orlando tells me they have some pretty kick ass coffee.

  • well the proof be in the pudding/coffee

It better be good to overcome the bad image (logo/cheesy name)

BTW Footnote, is the Coffee Table closing? I heard me a rumor that the new owner couldn’t save it…

  • Maybe the Cuppy’s logo was designed to get people talking about it like this? In that case, their marketing people are geniuses!

  • No offense but that Coffee Table grosses me out. I wish that Starbucks would have taken it over. Great building. It needs gutted.

I imagine the conversation going more like this:

“so, what is IN a coffee shop?”

“well, beans. we could call it beans cafe”

    “i’ve got it. Beanies!”

    “you mean like the cap”

“yeah, it’s fun. people with kids will love it!”

“not sure, sounds kinda jokester-ish, what else?”

    “coffeese!”

“how would you spell that? kinda sounds like cough ease. could be a great name for a espresso flavored cough suppressant.”

“Muggies! ha. like people faces. little faces? get it. you’r ‘MUG’. urban people talk like that, do they not!?”

“maybe, i haven’t been to the city in years, but it makes me think about being mugged. not good. how about cuppies!”

“ok. ok. i see where we’re going. but that kind of reminds me of urine testing. like ‘pee in a cup’ or cup-pee’s”

    “that’s a stretch. we’re calling it cuppies,”

“but i still kind of like beanies. That could be our logo, a beanie cap with a coffee bean on it!”

    “it’s cuppies. you’re fired”

  • Hey Skreened–

    What about “Cuppy’s, Dumbass!”

  • There’s apparently a soft opening today from 12-6, with regular hours starting tomorrow. Pretty good location for scooping up the Dakota and future Ibiza residents as built-in clientele. Hope the coffee’s as good as I’ve heard.
