In this week’s podcast we sit down for a chat with Mark Lundine who works for the Urban Development Division with the State of Ohio. Mark shares with us some insight on various development efforts around the state including the Smart Decline concept in Youngstown, the Over-the-Rhine redevelopment in Cincinnati, the Oregon District in Dayton, as well as local projects including Columbus Commons and our passenger rail efforts.

Walker, I really enjoyed this podcast. My parents live in Cincinnati, so I try to check out the progress in Over-the-Rhine when I can, and I gotta say that it really is heartening to see how much progress can be made with the right focus. Perceptions of the area are already starting to change, and this used to be ground zero for the open-air drug trade.
I would love for Columbus to use this model, but I dunno if there is the same interest. OTR has such a historical connection to the city, and there was always this sadness about how dilapidated it became, but no one wanted to be the first to start the redevelopment. I hope I’m wrong about this, but I don’t know if people and companies here care as much about Franklinton as people care about OTR and its beautiful buildings in Cincinnati. Overall, Cincinnati is really making some progress in its urban core. Dare I say they are actually being progressive in their vision and efforts?
