CU Podcast #15: Pedal Instead with Catherine Girves

By: Walker

In this week’s ColumbusUnderground.com Podcast, we chat with Catherine Girves on site at the Ohio State Buckeye Spring Game Football Scrimmage where the Pedal Instead program offers free bike parking during games. Catherine chats with us about a variety of topics including some other biking initiatives in Columbus as well as what life is like raising kids in the University District.

  • Girves rocks.  Pedal instead was just a concept and it has grown so quickly to be well-used at festivals and events.  Grass roots activism filling a clear need.  Thanks to you guys for all you do to encourage more biking.

  • I should mention that since we decided to do this podcast on site, it was done outdoors. The sun was shining that day, but it was also a bit windy and the microphone was picking it up, so we moved into a bus stop shelter to record. How’s that for a transit-oriented podcast? ;)

  • Great visiting with you Walker. Saturday got crazy after you left. Last year at the Spring Game we parked about 40 bikes so, factoring in heightened awareness of Pedal Instead, we planned to accommodate about 60 this year. Instead we ended up with 184 bikes — more than 4 times last year’s number! Our volunteers were hopping all day long (funny that we had 30 volunteers at Earth Day to park just 42 bikes, then 8 volunteers at Spring Game for 184)! Thanks to everyone for their hard work, and props to our cyclists for taking advantage of the beautiful day to bike to the game. If you want to know where we are going to be this season, head to pedalinstead.org New events adding all the time.
