It took a huge slice of luck to turn the game, but Columbus Crew SC won’t be complaining as Justin Meram’s massively deflected shot gave the home side a 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union on Saturday night at MAPFRE Stadium.
The lone goal came in a game of few chances as a Hiquain-less Crew SC tried to overwhelm a weakened Union side with possession and some direct running from forward Kekuta Manneh, who made another impressive appearance.
Meram’s goal came midway in the second half as the recently All-Star-snubbed forward picked up the ball wide of the Union goal before pushing inward and whipping a left-footer that appeared to be going well wide until it hit the unfortunate foot of Union defender Joshua Yaro and deflected past a helpless John McCarthy in the Philadelphia goal.
The MLS’ weird schedule means Columbus will again face Philadelphia this coming Wednesday, this time on the road as Crew SC will hope for a another slice of luck, while Philadelphia will be hoping for the return of one of two playing missing on Saturday evening.
