The Crew is expected to announce Wednesday that coach Sigi Schmid will leave the Crew after three seasons, according to one of multiple sources who confirmed Schmid will not return in 2009. Assistant coach and former Crew player Robert Warzycha is the top candidate to replace Schmid.
Schmid won the coach of the year award after leading the Crew to the Major League Soccer championship. Columbus defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 in the MLS Cup title game on Nov. 23 in Carson, Calif.
An agreement on a new contract could not be reached, however, and Schmid made no secret of his plans to explore other opportunities. He met with officials from the expansion Seattle Sounders last week.

What a dumb move by the Crew. They had an opportunity to build a dynasty (whatever that’s worth in the MLS, but being a dynasty in any sport is a Good Thing) by keeping the best coach in the league around for as long as possible.
It’s ALL about the coach. When you have the best coach, the best players want to come play for you. When you have a first year former assistant coach, who cares?

Sigi had 1 good year, got offered a huge new deal and turned it down. His departure is not that big of a deal.
Time to elevate the Polish Rifle and win the whole damn thing again.
F WORD.

Exactly..
To be honest we gave Sigi 3 years and got back 1 horrible year, 1 not great year and one outstanding year.., and most front offices wouldn’t have given him the leeway he had..
I’ll not be happy to see the back of Sigi or Chad Marshall, but these are the breaks… We still have lineup that knows they can and the amazing on pitch leadership of GBS.. I think they won’t embarrass us this year…
Does not come as a surprise. I’d have liked him to stay, but Crew management fanned on this one. At least he’s in the same time zone as his wife now.
Typical.
strangely enough, I’m not as bummed as I thought I would be. We’re losing a good coach and a great player, but we’re likely keeping some great and good players and I’ve been a Warzycha fan since he came here. Hope they can keep their momentum.
I don’t follow the Crew too closely, but from what I’ve read in passing it sounds like the guy was pretty dead set on relocating his job back to the West Coast where his family is at. I don’t know if any amount of money The Crew offered him could get him to stay longer.
His wife is ill and his son plays soccer in Southern California. I’d also not be surprised if his salary deal was well above the reported $500-600k we offered, but even if it isn’t, the first two are reason enough.

I am not surprised either. I don’t think HSG could have kept him with any offer at this point. If the reported offer is true, it is the same or more than what Seattle reportedly offered ($500k/yr). HSG should have started talks earlier but that might not have helped. He wants back to the left coast, and probably wants a fresh challenge, too.
As for not looking attractive, now, to top players, as someone else mentioned, we already have some of the best in the league. This team should be solid next year, if we can find can find a good center back to replace Marshall if he leaves.
Polish Rifle FTW!!1!
If Marshall leaves, we are probably sunk. A center back like that doesn’t come along that often. We had Dooley and Fraser at the ends of their careers, but a guy like Marshall, who is improving, that would be a huge loss.
I’m thinking Marshall is gone, just from what I’ve heard. I understand that his agent has been pushing him that this is the time to move and get Euro experience (even in a 2nt tier euro club like Mainz). If he does go, we’ll miss that 6’3″ for sure. He was a terror in the post season..
I disagree that we’re “sunk” though.. if we were losing GBS or Carrol too, I’d agree, but the bones are still there.. I still think we’ll have some depth even without Marshall and Evans returning. I think we’ll pull through fine.. I’m expecting we’ll be a dangerous team for some time to come.
