Cornerstone Coffee closing end of January

By: Submitted News

The Coffee Quadrangle (Brioso, Cornerstone, Starbucks, & Dunkin Donuts) will be short one coffee option (leaving only a coffee triangle, it lacks alliteration) come February. Unfortunately, this little space on the corner of Gay and 3rd (with a great view of Gay St.) in the Carlyles building wasn’t able to make it through a difficult winter. If you want some Crimson coffee Downtown you better get your fix, because the next closest location of Crimson Cup is in northern Clintonville. I can only speculate on what the space could be, maybe a little bar, a convenience store? Oh well, I’ll miss the people-watching here, like the lady who walked her ferret around (I think she gave up), the bike messengers crossing 3rd when the light is red, and the time McCain was across the street at the Renaissance.

  • I thought Javas in the Convention Center served Crimson Cup? Darn. I love you guys.

  • Couldn’t say for sure from their website and I always forget that there are places inside of the convention center.

  • FYI: Urban Spirit serves Crimson Cup and isn’t that far away.

This news doesn’t surprise me though. Can’t say I’ve ever seen many people in this shop. Hrm.

  • The owner of Cuppy’s told me recently that they’re trying to switch over to Crimson Cup as well

  • It was just a difficult space. From what I understood, they were paying 2x the avg rent to pay the landlord back for the buildout of the space. And it’s pretty hard to compete with Brioso, which is just a block down the street.

  • Yeah, they were open months before I ever saw a person in there. Of course as Chester pointed out, there was never much reason to stop in with Brioso down the street. I wouldn’t mind seeing something other than a coffee shop go in here..

Bakery? Sandwich shop? Crepery? Wine Bar?

I think any of those would do better in this space….

  • Does Warehouse serve crimson cup?

  • Always sucks to hear a small business going under : (

    Here’s a link I found with Crimson Cup locations…

  • This really is a shame. It’s sad to see people who took a risk go under. Unfortunately I don’t think this is the last place we will see close this winter.

  • As far as what could take its place …… with a spot that small I think a Newstand / small convience store would work well. The residents above it alone might keep it afloat.

  • It’s sad to see this go but it does not surprise me. I was walking around the area one weekend and wanted to stop in and get some joe. Unfortunately, like many shops downtown, they were closed on the weekend.

I think we should get a Jamba Juice put in there.

  • This is too bad. I never got the chance to try them, as I don’t work downtown, so I’m just not down there all that often during the week.

I would love to see a good newsstand (a la Fountain News in downtown Cincy) go in that spot, as that’s something that seems lacking in Columbus since Liberty Books closed. But with the poor state of the economy generally, and the shrinking of newspapers and magazines, that’s probably not something that’s going to have a great chance of success. Especially if the rent is high in that location.
