    Construction Roundup: January 2014

We’re kicking off the year in Columbus construction with a photo roundup in near whiteout conditions. This month has been brutally cold and a weekend of snowstorms has got most construction crews halted in their work temporarily.

So far, most of this year’s development announcements have come in the way of planning updates. Columbus is ready to take the next steps with Complete Streets and the Bikeways Master Plan while community outreach is underway for a new West Franklinton neighborhood plan. The City of Columbus also announced an effort to crack down on abandoned properties and buildings that violate code. Neighbors clashed over plans to develop a new mid-rise apartment building next to Italian Village Park. And the Columbus Idea Foundry officially broke ground on their new Franklinton home.

We also recapped 2013 right at the end of the year with a great Development Year in Review by Brent Warren, and a list of the Top 10 Urban Development projects from our annual readers survey.

The Confluence Cast: Grave Matters – Unearthing the North Graveyard

There is often a complex interplay between preservation and progress. A year into his exploration, Columbus Underground reporter Jesse Bethea continues to sift through the story of how the removal of remains from what was once the North Market parking lot unfolded. From the contentious removal of centuries-old graves to the forensic analysis of unearthed remains, today’s episode navigates the ethical, legal, and emotional complexities surrounding the issue.  In the quest to honor the past while embracing the future, we examine what lies beneath the surface of urban development and confront the ghosts of history that still shape our city today.
