The Community Tricycle has been finished and is ready for use.
The community tricycle project intends to provide a no-cost outlet for those wishing to move bulkier and heavier objects and goods without the use of a motorized vehicle. Great for hauling groceries, recyclables, small boxes, goods, small furniture, kegs and other things under 200 lbs in a less than 5 mile radius in town. It is an adult sized tricycle.
One can contact me to borrow the tricycle provided that they take good care of it, secure it when not in use, and return it in a reasonable time. There is also a facebook group http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=31479442802 to join to show your support.
You are responsible for your own safety and providing your own lock.
The tricycle currently needs a tarp and a good set of lights (and better parts) if anyone wishes to donate such.
This is all part of an effort to help people live a more car-free and car-lite lifestyle by providing a service to counter one of the barriers to being car-free… how to move stuff.
The tricycle is not intended to carry passengers in the cargo area, and operator must know how to ride in traffic.
Enjoy. Pictures soon!

Awesome.
If you want to add a trailer to the project, I’d be willing to offer mine once it gets built up.
I might have a tarp for you, I’ll check tonight. I may also have some extra ratcheting tie-downs if you would like those. If so, I can drive by and drop them off.
You know the place. I might be picky and request a brown or dark green tarp as to not look trashy at Merc’s house… but I guess that is his decision.
Nice idea!
This is very cool.
Kudos!
Kudos!
You are welcome. I would love to Roland rolling about on it.
Used the trike twice today to move recycling. Waste management has never been so fun.
Well I’m sad to report that the community trike may be permanantly out of commission after an incident last night….
I was riding the trike back from Scully’s down Mt Pleasant Ave, approaching 1st Ave, I received a phone call. So I pulled onto 1st Ave eastbound and then made a right hand turn between two parked cars to get out of the road to answer the phone. As I was pulling the trike up between two parked cars toward the curb and sidewalk, a large GM or Ford van (not a plumbers van but not quite an econoline) smashed into the rear corner of the vehicle to my right and squashed the rear wheels of the trike between the parked vehicle and the green smallish pick-up truck parked in front of it. The van that hit the parked vehicle was a large American-made van white with green horizontal Pinstripes (the police officer looked at some debris and said it might have been light blue accents).
So after the impact, the trike was wedged between the two parked vehicles. I was able the get it out of its close confines and call the CPD and report a hit and run. The CPD came maybe 15-20 minutes later and did a very professional job reporting it. I am not sure, but the van’s plates said either GBX or DBX, but I might be wrong… the whole thing happened so fast.
So the trike may be done now after weeks of awesome service. :( I am also lucky to be alive in retrospect and after the CPD officer amazed by me not being hurt at all as the trikes rear axle took the brunt of the impact and saved me from getting squashed. The van hit the parked car pretty good and knocked a good sized divot in it. Two feet closer and my abdomen would have been deleted from my hips and torso… so I was lucky that I did not get killed last night.
Remember Columbus…. If you chose to operate a motor vehicle… its potential danger is severe. I do think it analogous to a firearm, and the direction and energy of your actions can inflict great harm. Understand this potential everytime you operate or use a motor vehicle. The complacency for this constant type of potential harm and damage is very disheartening.
Wow. Damn glad only the vehicles are official casualties and you avoided dissection.
maybe i can fix the frame? how bad is it? zach i would have been devastated if you would have been hurt. i would have jumped on your casket as it was being lowered in the ground.
I love your abdomen and I am extremely grateful that it will continued to be filled with good food and fancy beer tonight – instead of being splattered on E. 1st….
Glad to hear you’re OK.
How can we revive this? I loved the idea.
Sucks to hear about that. Hopefully they catch the hit-n-runner. Glad you made it away ok though. Hope the trike can get fixed. :? I thought this was a very cool community project, so that’s a bummer that it’s out of commission so quickly.
Sherman and me are going to try some metal working on the thing soon to hopefully get it back in shape. The only tricycle dealer in town that i know of said he can’t order parts for it ??? and knew nobody else who could. I need to do some web searching…
Any way please be on the lookout for an American made conversion van, white with green or light blue horizontal pinstripes. Partial plates maybe DBX or GBX and a chunk missing or smashed in on the front passenger side corner.
Just saw this today for the first time. I’m really glad that you didn’t get hurt.
I’m sure the trike will ride again!
i hope you and sherm can fix it, it’s a nice little trike.
Here is a map I made showing where this happened and where I have looked for the van. I know it is extremely unlikely I will find the van by biking up and down every street and alley, but I am a man of extremes and this is my only method. Is there anyway a civilian can get access to license registrations and such. I will do the investigation if the police are too busy?

here’s another trike I came across if you are interested in keeping the project alive http://columbus.craigslist.org/bik/842120184.html
I don’t think you have access to registrations, but if you find the van and call the police they will follow up for you.
I emailed that guy with the trike for sale… I hope he gets it. For safety’s sake, could someone else e-mail him and try to reserve it. I’ll pay for it and all, but maybe if someone else mentions how the trike is being used as a community resource and such?? I have not had the best luck with craigslist ads and sending the e-mail trough.
