    Commonwealth Sandwich Bar Closes

The Commonwealth Sandwich Bar closed their doors quietly last week, leaving sandwich fans hungry. The business opened at 1437 North High Street to positive reviews, so the abrupt closure caught many by surprise.

Commonwealth Co-Owner Lisa Edge stated via email that they’d prefer to keep their response to the closure limited, but she did also mention that the building would be demolished as a part of the Northside Library Branch expansion project next door.

“We’re really early along when it comes to the Northside branch, so I’m not too sure about that demolition,” said Ben Zenitsky, Marketing & Communications Specialist at the Columbus Metropolitan Library. “We’re hoping to break ground on construction in 2014 and be completed in 2015. That branch library will be tripling in size into a new state-of-the-art 27,000 square foot building.”

Edge and partner Erik Till have been working on new restaurant concept White Rabbit in the Brewery District since August 2012, with an original opening date slated for November 2012. The opening has been pushed back several times, with the duo aiming for an August 2013 opening when we spoke to them this summer. Chef Bill Fugitt was formerly slated to head up the kitchen at White Rabbit, but was announced in late October as the new executive chef of Chez du Bon, which is scheduled to open next Friday, November 15th.

The White Rabbit facebook page has been removed and no other updates have been made available at this time.
