Columbus State President Presents Vision for Revitalized Discovery District

Columbus State President David Harrison presented details of the college’s Master Plan this morning to a group of 150 government, business and civic leaders. Although the plan was first revealed during a board meeting in July, today’s event gave Harrison the opportunity to officially unveil the plan to the public and to present his vision of the impact the plan could have on the future of downtown.

New animated graphics and a video show the possibility of radically changed streetscapes on Cleveland Avenue, Spring and Long Streets. The plan calls for new academic buildings and green space that would fill in the surface parking lots that currently dominate the view of campus from those streets. Two possibilities were outlined for new buildings; a School of Business Technology and School of Hospitality Management. Parking would be concentrated in new garages on the outer edge of the campus.

No funding has been secured for any of the new construction laid out in the plan. Columbus State plans to explore funding options with area business and civic leaders. For the parking garages, the college hopes to partner with neighboring institutions who would also benefit from added parking.
