Columbus Scooter Parking Debate
June 10, 2008 by Jeff Johnson
A group of downtown enthusiasts/scooter fans met this past Friday to discuss ways to enhance the urban experience and how it relates to moving people in, out and around downtown Columbus.
Those who commute to work on motorized two-wheeled vehicles are seeking solutions. This group is interested in safe and secure parking, not unlike any other commuter. Their challenge, however, is unique, in that most parking garages prohibit scooter parking and securing a scooter is often essential, as some weigh less than 200 pounds.
The urban enthusiasts are seeing opportunity. There is an opportunity for the city to reduce congestion by promoting the use of two-wheeled vehicles. There’s an opportunity for downtown businesses to see increased foot traffic when more people arrive on two-wheeled vehicles – it leave more spaces open for four-wheeled vehicles.
Considerations discussed at Friday’s meeting included designating specific two-wheeled vehicle areas in and around downtown that would offer no-cost parking. Private lots and city owned parking spaces were considered, as was the potential for advertisers, such as Harley Davidson or Vespa, as sponsors these various locations.

Columbus Scooter Parking Debate

i always use a car space(for motorcycle). the reason I do it is 1. to park and 2. to take a space away from a car.
I figure if cars see 1 bike per spot they will see all the wasted parking spaces and then hopefully something will be done like prioritized cycle/scooter parking
Spouse and I usually get both into one parking spot. I figure if Harleys can, so can we. We don’t use cars much at all. We both have easy access to motorcycle/scooter spots at work and each commute’s only 2mi. No freeway required.
the city can legally ticket you for 2 vehicles sharing a meter.
well, they can….that’s why the laws need to get changed.
I had seen that in another thread. There’s nothing I can find in Columbus code that explicitly states this. They do state ‘individual’ spaces, but no clear definition.
Similar to the ‘moped ok at bike rack’ thing, it’s not actually in the city code.
do you think they would allow 2 smart cars per meter?

Plenty of info about 1′ minimum between vehicles, proximity to curb in parallel parking spots, but not a word about how many vehicles of any classification permitted in a spot.
Care to tell me how being law-abiding is not responsible? Or vice versa?
I’m going to start cleaning up my act too:
1. No more parking on sidewalks
2. End all forms of Jaywalking
3. Never go a mile over the speed limit
4. Stop buying cornflakes on Sunday (in Columbus at least where it is illegal)
5. Absolutely no more ignoring orators during Decoration Day anywhere in Ohio
I could either get back on the straight and narrow, or realize that laws are expected to be reasonably interpreted by those that enforce it. Most officers are sensible enough to give a pass to a scooter parked out of the way.

I don’t see it either. but I do think you might be parking on borrowed time just like the parkers in the alley, until someone (parking attendant) gets a bug up his/her ass and starts writing tickets.
I think a call could clear this up, anyone have a number?
I’ll ask Herr Ziegler, the local parking enforcement guy if I see him today.

The less attention you bring to these types of issues the better.
these issues are going to need tended to sooner or later, I’d rather know what my responsibilities are than chance it. sometimes don’t ask don’t tell works fine, until it explodes in your face like it did with the alley parkers.
The breaking of laws, the violating of local ordinances, and the committing of unsavory actions is in no way endorsed by the posters of this thread, the operators of this internet tube, or your mama – Everything you have heard to the contrary is a work of fiction or a bald faced lie. Your millage may vary, trespassers will be violated, and the capital of Nebraska is LINCOLN.
BTW: High temp silicon gasket seal. Best invention EVAR. If its not on the gaskets of YOUR exaust system it probably should be. BOO-YA!
+1
I’ll bet that before the start of next summer there will be several two-wheel specific zones set up for easy and legal parking in and around downtown.
Bring it on! I want to buy a scooter. I also do not want parking tickets.
