From Bizjournals.com:

The best places to start a small business
by G. Scott Thomas

Bizjournals used a six-part formula to analyze the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas, searching for the places that are most conducive to the creation and development of small businesses.

The highest scores in bizjournals’ study went to areas that have prosperous economies, are expanding rapidly, and are densely packed with small businesses. (Bizjournals defines a small business as any private-sector employer with 99 or fewer employees.)

  • Great news! Maybe City Hall will come to its’ senses and stop handing out tax abatements like Shriners pass out candy at a parade?

  • Oof. 58th. We’ve still got a lot of improving to do.

Still, Columbus is higher on the list than all other Ohio cities, and very high among the whole midwest/rustbelt region.

  • Ohio is a tough place to do business in general. When they implemented a sales tax to the point of delivery, which for us would have required a subscription to a tax-server and a change in merchant accounts (an extra 120/mo + 4x a year filing with an accountant), we just had to pull the plug on all Ohio sales. So instead of getting the 6 1/2 % we were collecting, now they get nothing.
But for the abatements, we’d never build or expand in the City of Columbus, the B.S. fees for everything including permits, are between 2 and 10x those of the suburbs. Plus, in the ‘burbs you can actually get an audience with the mayor and council.

  • Agreed, this is Columbus’ biggest challenge and where we lack the most. We have to address this if we ever want Columbus to be vibrant.
Small business generates the majority of all new job growth and adds a lot of vitality to a city.

Pez just curious what kind of business are you in?

  • These surveys make me nuts because they feed delusion. There are 30 Million small businesses in the United States. What type of small businesses are they referencing? It might as well be a survey on the city with the best tasting tap water based on the perceived differences (with no baseline) amongst a group of 20 frumpy old men who are “experts”.

In terms of small businesses are they factoring together a five person start-up that might be the next defacto video standard of Twitter (TwitVids) or a Jani-King Franchise? Or both together? lol.. Sure.

Our alleged ranking in this rigmarole is a whole other matter.

  • The USA was also just voted as one of the top 195 countries in the world for small business.

  • 58 out of a 100 isnt much to be proud of. it may be the 58th best city on that list, but its also the 42nd worst.
