The Columbus Metropolitan Library has been rated the best library system in the nation, nudging the Cuyahoga County Public Library from the top spot.

This is the third time the city’s library system has achieved the top ranking from Hennen’s American Public Library Rating. It also was No. 1 in 1999 and 2005 and has been in the top four every year since 1999, the first year the rankings were published in American Libraries magazine.

The Cleveland-area system is second. The Worthington, Upper Arlington and Grandview Heights libraries also were rated in the top 100.

  • So I take it no more self loathing for our little cow town? :D

Great to see all the Columbus love lately.

  • Good to see the Worthington system show strongly also. There are a lot of Ohio libraries that rated highly, shows that there is still a lot of commitment to libraries by government and public support.

I’ve never had any self-loathing for our city. That type of behavior comes from within a person. This type of news doesn’t really matter to people who want to blame their personal issues on their geography.

Anyway though, it is great news to see Columbus nab the #1 spot again! Three times in 9 years ain’t bad! :D

  • We have special librarians… Did you know they are from another planet? :P

    They knows things.

  • The Met really has been good to me over the years. Can’t argue with the ranking at all. Nice to see one of our hidden gems gets brought out of hiding once a year for these rankings.

I should have worded that better. Seems like there has been an explosion of Columbus love in the last few years from outside sources.

It may not have an effect on some, but for those that still consider us some little midwest town, I wonder how much longer they can hold on to that.

  • This is one of the reasons I say parenting, or the lack of parenting, is the real reason our schools fail. The tools for learning are there for everyone free of charge. It’s up to the individual to use them.

  • Woo Hoo Library!!!… Yeah!!

  • Libraries = the noblest of all public institutions?

  • I use the library more than any other institution in Columbus. Love it.

  • I love our library.

  • As a former CML employee, I hate to say that the rankings were done improperly and need to be recalculated. The same information that was used for the 2006 rankings was used again for the 2008 rankings (2006 was the last year that CML was #1).

From the American Library Association website:

“Wrong Numbers Used in HAPLR Report, Says American Libraries,” American Library Association, October 02, 2008.

  • Either way I am pretty sure we have some kickass libraries.

Did you know CML allows folks with fines to pay them off by reading in the library?

Pick out a book, present your card at the customer service desk and sign in to you read away your fines at the rate of $8/hr. I have already paid off $24 in two visits! ($27 to go)

What a great deal! I may have to go read at the library this evening and reduce my debt!

  • Are you reading to someone else, or just yourself?

I was inpressed years ago when I found out you could work off fines by coming in on Mondays and helping sort the mountain of books returned over the weekend. As someone whose family personal funded the expansion of the Cincinnati library with overdue fines, I thought this was a way cool alternative approach.

    THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Columbus-area libraries have shared bragging rights in recent years for being designated “best in the nation” by Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings.

Now, the entire state can boast with a new rating system that casts Ohio as a library nirvana.

Library Journal, a trade publication for librarians, uses a five-star scale similar to that used to grade hotels and restaurants. The system measures patron use, items checked out, number of public computers and program popularity.
