Columbus Mega Summer Weekend 2008 – Vol. 9

By: Walker

Do you ever feel like there’s just TOO much to do in Columbus? Because this weekend is host to another batch of great events that you’ll have a hard time picking and choosing from. The Ohio State Fair continues through this weekend. If you haven’t been yet, this is your last chance to get your deep-fried-on-a-stick cravings satisfied. Music, fire, and water will be featured on the Riverfront this Saturday for another installment of Waterfire. The new James Turrell installation will be opening tonight at the Franklin Park Conservatory. You can get awesome at Awesomefest this Saturday at Junctionview Studios. Float down to Grove City tomorrow for their annual Hot Air Balloon Festival. The Hills Market will be boiling crabs again this Saturday. The Columbus Landmarks Foundation will be hosting a tour of Rush Creek Village this Sunday. Speaking of Landmarks, you can also catch a midnight showing of Darren Aronofsky’s Pi at the Landmark Gateway theater this weekend.

Is that enough for one weekend? Don’t wear yourself out too much, because we’ve still got a happy hour event on Wednesday. Enjoy your weekend, Columbus!

  • Don’t forget the Columbus Jazz Orchestra at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium for Jazzoo. Friday night at 8 pm.

  • Actually, you can’t get awesome at Awesomefest this Saturday at Junctionview Studios.

    It is happening… and it is a cool thing. But it is an urban triathlon and not a spectator sport, per se. Certainly it isn’t covered insurance wise to handle a large crowd and there won’t be much to see. It involves:

    * a 30+ mile bike ride

    * a tattoo

    * and watching all 6 Rocky movies.

    I don’t believe it is designed for the public, but for the participants.

  • Is registration for Awesomefest closed?

  • Dunno.

    I’m at JV waiting for Nick, so I can ask him.

  • Ahh, according to the blog:

    This is first come first serve. There are only forty slots available for Awesomefest 2008 (twenty with a tattoo and twenty w/out). As of today fourteen people have paid for tattoo slots which only leaves 6. Only three people have paid for a non tattoo spot and so there are still plenty of spots available. You can pay via Paypal. Click on the appropriate button on the top right of this page. And spread the word to your friends about the need to get your fee paid up quickly.

  • Does anybody know where that picture was taken? I walked around and tried to triangulate… my guess is the roof of the Ohio Historical Society!

  • I believe it was taken last year by a Dispatch photographer, so the configuration of the rides could have been a little bit different.

  • I love these mega weekend write-ups. Thanks so much for doing them!
